Surprise package Kuroshio to return from Australia to Clongiffen Stud

Kuroshio, one of the surprise packages among the current crop of freshman sires, is to resume shuttling from his native Australia to Europe. The Darley-owned son of Exceed And Excel is to stand the coming breeding season at Clongiffen Stud in County Meath under the Compas Stallions banner.

The deal for the horse's northern hemisphere rights was brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops on behalf of client Abdulaziz Al Rabban.

"Kuroshio has had some outstanding results this year, all off the back of a very small number of average mares," said Jackson-Stops. "His stats in the UK are what attracted us most, having produced five winners from 14 runners, all from a particularly small crop."

Despite limited opportunities during his solitary season on duty at Overbury Stud in 2015, Kuroshio recorded some eye-catching early results, with his six European winners including three stakes performers, led by the smart Dunkerron, who finished runner-up in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes.

His daughter Daphinia also finished second to Signora Cabello in the Listed Marygate Fillies' Stakes, while Kurious was a close fourth in the Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes.

"He has the perfect profile for a commercial stallion having been a Group 3 winner at two and a Group 2 winner at three over five and a half furlongs and five furlongs respectively," said Jackson-Stops. "This precocity is being passed on to his progeny in abundance."

Kuroshio, who has covered 415 mares during his southern hemisphere seasons on duty at Darley's Northwood Park, also boasts winners in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Italy.

Al Rabban – a 27-year-old Qatari businessman who has horses in training with George Scott, Sir Michael Stoute and Andrew Balding – will be supporting Kuroshio at stud, with his debut book set to include the likes of a half-sister to Oaks heroine Talent and a daughter of Dubawi and Folk Opera.

"Abdulaziz will also be looking to support breeders when Kuroshio's offspring return to the sales ring as foals and yearlings in a couple of years time," added Jackson-Stops. "Compas Stallions' Micheal Orlandi will also be looking to support Kuroshio."

Kuroshio is by burgeoning sire of sires Exceed And Excel and is a brother to Group 3 winner Believe'N'Succeed, who is better known as the dam of Anthony Van Dyck and New Zealand Group 1 winner Bounding.

He will stand for €6,000 and will be available to few during the ITM Irish Stallion Trail in January.
