Scandinavia's 'Iron Horse' pedigree provides Justify with yet another European Classic triumph

Justify added a third European Classic winner to his burgeoning stud record when Coolmore homebred Scandinavia ran out a gutsy winner of the St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday.

The season’s oldest Classic delivered a pulsating finish, with dual Derby hero Lambourn and Queen's Vase victor Carmers engaging Scandinavia in a three-way tussle with three furlongs to run.

By the two-furlong pole Scandinavia had battled his way to the lead, but soon faced a fresh challenge from Stay True, the final Classic runner for the late, great Galileo. Tom Marquand urged Scandinavia into a decisive advantage deep inside the closing stages, and his mount needed all of his iron will to repel the late thrust of fast-finishing runner-up Rahiebb, who went down by just a neck.

Scandinavia’s willingness in the finish was reminiscent of one of his near relations, as the Justify colt is the sixth foal out of Fabulous, a Galileo half-sister to the ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway.

This family has served Coolmore particularly well since John Magnier purchased Mariah's Storm, second dam of Scandinavia, for $2.6 million at Keeneland in November 1996. She bred eight winners, with Giant's Causeway, who was in utero at the time of the dam’s purchase, joined by his full-sister You'resothrilling.

The Cherry Hinton Stakes scorer has bred eight winners of her own, a remarkable four of whom won at the highest level. The Group 1-winning quartet are: Gleneagles, Happily, Joan Of Arc and Marvellous, while her other offspring, Taj Mahal, Coolmore, Toy and Vatican City, also placed in elite company.

Mariah’s Storm also bred Freud, a leading stallion in New York, and Pearling, dam of Decorated Knight. The pedigree has already been back in the headlines this season as Butterflies, a Group 3-placed Galileo sister to Fabulous, is the granddam of Coolmore’s unbeaten Marble Hill Stakes scorer Albert Einstein.

Fabulous produced a three-parts brother to Scandinavia, a colt by No Nay Never, in 2024 and delivered a filly by Siyouni earlier this year. She was among Wootton Bassett’s book during the most recent breeding season.

The St Leger strike sees Scandinavia become Justify’s second European Classic winner of the season - and third overall.

His Town Moor triumph follows on from the ill-fated Ruling Court claiming the 2,000 Guineas back in May. The Godolphin colour bearer succumbed to complications arising from laminitis last month. The trio of European Classic winners is completed by City Of Troy, whose four Group 1 victories were headed by last year’s Derby, along with scores in the Juddmonte International, Eclipse and Dewhurst Stakes.

Scandinavia and City Of Troy highlight the importance of Justify as an outcross option for Coolmore’s abundance of Sadler’s Wells-line broodmares. The pair are both bred on the Justify - Galileo cross, while another of the sire’s nine Group/Grade 1 winners, Coolmore’s Nassau Stakes and Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Opera Singer, is out of Sadler’s Wells’ daughter Liscanna.

Ruling Court was another example of the nick's success, as he was out of a mare by another of Sadler’s Wells sons in High Chaparral.

Justify has sired 88 black-type performers and stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $250,000 at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

Scandinavia arguably denied Galileo a poignant Classic send off, with Stay True finishing in third. However, the race still highlighted the breed-shaper’s immense influence, as all bar one of the seven-strong field have Galileo high up in their pedigree.

Runner-up Rahiebb is by Galileo’s best son Frankel, as is Juddmonte homebred Tarriance, who finished last of the seven. Fourth home was Lambourn, who is by Galileo’s son Australia, with Further, by another sire son in Waldgeist, was sixth.

The only runner in the field without Galileo’s blood coursing through their veins is Carmers. Fiona Carmichael’s homebred is by Wootton Bassett and out of Signe, a daughter of Galileo’s illustrious half-brother Sea The Stars.
