‘We didn’t expect that!’ - breeding syndicate in clover as homebred Perfect Power colt brings 105,000gns

The Rogues Gallery are no strangers to success on the track – think the likes of Rogue Millennium and Rogue Lightning – and the outfit’s breeding syndicate enjoyed a big result in the ring on Tuesday when their homebred Perfect Power colt sold to breeze-up maestro Robson Aguiar for 105,000gns. 

The six-figure youngster is the first foal out of Rogue Missile, a daughter of Dandy Man who carried the Rogues’ red and white silks to victory on two of her four starts for Tom Clover. The colt was consigned through Barton Stud. 

“He’s the first horse we’ve sold for The Rogues Gallery, although Tony [Elliott, syndicate founder] has had mares with us for a couple of years,” said Barton’s Tom Blain. “He’s a very good first foal with a very good walk. He got a place in Book 2 but we thought we’d bring him here and stand out a bit. It was the right call because we ended up with Robson and Jono Mills from Rabbah on the horse. It’s a really good result. Some of the owners are here and it’s given them a great buzz. It’s a thrill for us too but I’m just delighted for them.”

Janette Weaver was among the delighted owners present, and she reacted to the transaction by saying: “We’re absolutely over the moon, we didn’t expect that! There’s a part of me that’s heartbroken, you’d have liked to keep the first foal, but I understand for commercial purposes you need to move these horses on. It’s been a fantastic journey.” 

Weaver, who previously worked in the industry for the likes of Sir Michael Stoute, added: “Fingers crossed for his new owners and that he turns out to be as good as we know he can be. We know his mum was a lot better than she showed on the racecourse.” 

This was not Weaver’s first visit to Tattersalls, as she was also involved in the ownership group behind Rogue Millennium. The Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner was sold to Scott Heider for 1,650,000gns during the 2023 December Mares Sale. 

Paul Tyler was another owner present. He said: “I’ve absolutely loved the whole journey. From birth to here, it’s been amazing. We’re looking forward to following his career as he progresses.” 

Tuesday’s six-figure trade might not be The Rogues Gallery’s last big result at Tattersalls this autumn, as Blain reported the syndicate has a Persian King colt heading to Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale.

“He’s got a very good pedigree, it’s the family of Blue De Vega, and he’s a very nice horse,” he said. “The Rogues have some nice foals on the ground by some good commercial stallions too, so there’s lots to look forward to.” 

Although Aguiar is a key cog in the Amo Racing machine, the Brazilian confirmed this purchase was for his own portfolio. He knows plenty about the pedigree, having put both Perfect Power and his sire, Ardad, through their paces during their younger days. 

“I bought him for the track,” he said. “I like this horse a lot. I broke in and breezed his daddy [Ardad] and I breezed him [Perfect Power] as well. Hopefully he will be like them.”
