The BBAG Mixed Breeze-Up Sale was topped by the Group-winning Zavaro, a well-related son of Gestut Etzean's venerable Areion who sold to Stall Villa Medici for €52,000 on Friday.

Consigned by Gestut Ohlerweiherhof, the five-year-old was a dual winner for trainer Henk Grewe and struck in Group 3 company when landing the Kalkmann Fruhjahrs-Meile at Dusseldorf last April.

The entire was a half-length second in the Kronimus Badener Meile at Baden-Baden on Thursday, while he was also fourth to Fearless King in the German 2,000 Guineas in 2020 and twice Group-placed that term.

Zavaro was bought by Christoph Holschbach for €14,000 from Gestut Brummerhof at the BBAG October Yearling Sale in 2018, and is the sixth foal out of the unraced Rock Of Gibraltar mare Zavaala, who is a close relation to Noblesse Stakes scorer Danelissima and Daneleta, the dam of Dewhurst Stakes scorer Intense Focus.

It is a family influenced by Jim Bolger as Zavaro is out of Zavaala, a daughter of Zavaleta whose five wins for the training maestro included the Derrinstown 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown and the Athasi Stakes.

Zavaala went through the ring on several occasions, including when bought by Gestut Brummerhof for 72,000gns from The Castlebridge Consignment at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2013. She then sold to GG Bloodstock And Racing for just 1,000gns at the 2017 Mare Sale.

HFTB Racing Agency picked up another Brummerhof-consigned lot in the final horse to enter the ring, the Lope De Vega filly Promised.

Sold for €38,000, the three-year-old is out of Grosser Canon-Preis winner Promesse De L'Aube, a daughter of Galileo and the Group-winning German Oaks runner-up White Rose, in turn a Platini half-sister to German St Leger scorer Win For Us and German Group 2 winner Wild Side.

Overall, 54 lots sold (from 76 offered) for turnover of €580,500, a median of €10,385 and an average of €10,750.
