Classic-winning stallion prospect Mac Swiney to be sold online by Goffs

Mac Swiney, winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Vertem Futurity Trophy, is being offered for sale online through Goffs on Friday.

Mac Swiney is a five-year-old son of sire-of-sires New Approach out of the Teofilo mare Halla Na Saoire, and represents an exciting opportunity for international and domestic buyers seeking a stallion prospect.

As a juvenile he won the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh and rounded off his campaign with that important Group 1 strike at Doncaster, beating One Ruler by three-quarters of a length with State Of Rest among those in behind.

At three, Mac Swiney, who was bred and trained by Jim Bolger and ran in the colours of his wife Jackie, short-headed stablemate Poetic Flare in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, giving connections a first win in the Classic and with the Racing Post describing it as a “serious performance in a decent 2,000 Guineas”.

Mac Swiney, who is being sold by the Bolgers' Glebe House Stables, then finished fourth in the Derby and sixth in the Irish Derby on his only two attempts at a mile and a half. His best subsequent effort came when third to Sealiway in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

Commenting on what is the first Goffs sale of 2023, group chief executive Henry Beeby said: "Goffs is delighted to be entrusted with the sale of Classic winner Mac Swiney on behalf of Mr Bolger.

"This is a rare opportunity to purchase a multiple Group 1-winning stallion prospect and we anticipate plenty of international interest."

The timed online auction starts on 11am and will close from 1pm.
