Newsells Park's seven-figure lot double all down to teamwork, says Dollar

Newsells Park Stud general manager Julian Dollar was quick to share the praise among his team after two seven-figure sales, led by the 3,400,000gns showstopper.

The Hertfordshire nursery sold a Galileo colt out of Posset, an Oasis Dream sister to Midday, to Godolphin for 1,100,000gns on behalf of breeders John and Tanya Gunther.

The Gunthers are enjoying a 2018 to remember, having bred US Triple Crown hero Justify and bred and campaigned St James's Palace Stakes winner Without Parole.

Later in the afternoon Newsells' homebred Galileo colt out of Shastye, thereby a brother to Secret Gesture, Sir Isaac Newton and recent Beresford Stakes scorer Japan, was knocked down to Coolmore's MV Magnier for 3,400,000gns.

This year's yearling is Shastye's fifth multi-million guinea offspring, as Sir Isaac Newton made 3,600,000gns in 2013, Japan sold for 1,300,000gns last year and another Galileo filly went for 1,350,000gns in 2016.

Secret Gesture was a 230,000gns vendor buyback as a yearling but was resold as a broodmare prospect to Darley for $3.6 million at Keeneland after winning the Middleton Stakes and running second in the Oaks.

Shastye has certainly repaid the 625,000gns it took Newsells to spend to add the Danehill half-sister to Arc winner Sagamix to its ranks in 2005.

"I'm absolutely thrilled that lightning has struck twice, first with Sir Isaac Newton and now with this horse, we're very lucky,” Dollar said.

"I'm thrilled for the team who work so hard to make it possible. Gerry Meehan, our yearling manager, makes my life very easy and does a wonderful job; there'll be no prouder man than him tonight.

“He loves the mare and loves selling the yearlings she's produced. He gets very close to the horses and puts an enormous amount of passion and hard work in. We wouldn't be able to do it without him.”

Assessing the leading lady of the Newsells broodmare band, Dollar added: "For a commercial operation like us to have a mare like Shastye is a dream come true. She's made us a lot of money, and that's obviously an understatement.

“We've got some daughters of hers which is great. We have a full-sister, a daughter by Street Cry and a daughter by Shamardal, which is exciting.

"Shastye is back in foal to Galileo. It's the easiest mating to plan every year. We believe she's carrying a filly. We'll treasure her while we've got her."

Reflecting on the Galileo colt out of Posset, Dollar said: "He was a lovely horse and, of course, it's great when you have Coolmore and Sheikh Mohammed bidding against each other. The Gunthers were happy with that. They're wonderful breeders and they can certainly give me a few tips on how to do it properly!”

Tuesday's top-selling pair join a growing list of horses sold by Royston-based Newsells Park Stud for a million guineas or more under the stewardship of Dollar, which includes the Dubawi filly who topped Book 1 at 2,100,000gns in 2015 and a Dubawi colt out of Danedream for 1,500,000gns last year.

The stud also had plenty to celebrate at Longchamp on Sunday, as Enable - a daughter of home stallion Nathaniel - made it back-to-back victories in the Arc, and Waldgeist, joint-owned by the operation with Gestut Ammerland, finished an honourable fourth.

As much as Dollar was keen to deflect the plaudits on Tuesday, he is clearly deserving of his own share.
