The Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes has thrown up classy performers in the past, not least subsequent Eclipse Stakes hero Mukhadram, and Peter Brant could have a smart prospect on his hands in this year's winner Francesco Clemente.

The American entrepreneur's colt may have drifted slightly on his way to success, but his resolution was not in doubt as he pulled two and a quarter lengths clear of Godolphin's Secret State, a son of Dubawi and Jacqueline Quest and therefore a half-brother to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty and a full-sibling to Listed winner and Group-placed Onassis.

White Birch Farm's colours have been carried to victory by stars such as Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and French Derby hero Sottsass and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Sistercharlie in recent years, and this Dubawi colt made quite the impression on his first start for John and Thady Gosden.

Francesco Clemente is the sixth foal out of the unraced Galileo mare Justlookdontouch, a close relation to Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine and dual Yorkshire Oaks victress Islington, as well as German Group 1 winner and multiple top-level placed Greek Dance.

Justlookdontouch is also a three-part sister to stakes winner and Gold Cup second Election Day and Brigadier Gerard Stakes scorer New Morning, as well as being a half-sister to Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victor and useful National Hunt sire Mountain High.

Francesco Clemente is in turn a half-brother to Abingdon, a daughter of Street Cry who won at Listed level three times and was also Group-placed a further three times for Sir Michael Stoute.

The eyecatching colt is yet another exciting prospect from the Dubawi-Galileo nick, which has been responsible in recent times for the likes of world champion Ghaiyyath, 2,000 Guineas hero Night Of Thunder and high-class stayer Dartmouth.

The 14-year-old Justlookdontouch was part of the Ballymacoll Stud dispersal in 2017, when she sold to White Birch Farm for 1,200,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. She has a two-year-old Dubawi colt named Howeitat and had a filly foal by Darley's supersire last term.

The first race on the Newmarket card on Wednesday saw another equally impressive winner in the Roger Varian-trained Ameynah, a Godolphin-bred daughter of Exceed And Excel who scored in the colours of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum.

Ameynah, who was a fine second on her debut over course and distance last October, pulled just under four lengths clear of Cheveley Park Stud homebred Enshrine, a Ulysses half-sister to last season's Hungerford Stakes and Nell Gwyn Stakes winner Sacred.

The winner is out of the Listed-placed Iffraaj mare Tazffin, who is in turn out of Curragh Pretty Polly Stakes scorer Tarfshi.

Tarfshi is a half-sister to Cheveley Park Stakes heroine and Princess Margaret Stakes winner Embassy.

Watch Ameynah stride clear - and some promise from Enshrine
