If it's a top-class racing filly, a proven producer of elite athletes or a regally bred mare in foal to a fashionable stallion that you want, then Fasig-Tipton's 'night of the stars' and the opening Book 1 session of the Keeneland November Breeding-Stock Sale are for you.

If you don't have bottomless pockets and are content to 'make do' with merely a talented racecourse performer or a very well bred and attractive individual in foal to a tried and tested sire, then there are thousands more mares available to buy over the 11 other days of selling at Keeneland.

Many have the credentials to produce progeny who will be successful in the ring or on the track and here we pinpoint 11 who, due to their pedigree or performances, hold particular appeal to European buyers and should not cost the earth.

Perhaps one could be the next Green Room, the Theatrical mare who went unsold at $280,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding-Stock Sale of 2005 and was bought by Templeton Railton Farms for $40,000 less at the same company's January fixture two months later.

She has produced Group 1 winners Lord Shanakill, Forever Together and Together Forever and her yearlings have amassed more than €9 million in the ring.

Nimble Foot

7yo ch m Danehill Dancer-Nasanice (Nashwan)

Consigned by Burleson Farms, Agent

Nimble Foot finished third in a hot Curragh maiden on debut for David Wachman – behind Killavullan Stakes second Royal Navy Ship and Racing Post Trophy fourth Jacobean, in front of Group 3 winner The Happy Prince – before racing for Alan Goldberg in the US, where she won at Philadelphia Park at four.

She is by champion sire Danehill Dancer, whose daughters have produced the likes of Alice Springs, Circus Maximus and Minding, and is a half-sister to dual Hardwicke Stakes winner Maraahel. Another half-sister, Safwa, is the dam of this season's Lockinge and Challenge Stakes victor Mustashry.

Nimble Foot is offered in foal to Mshawish and has a yearling filly by Noble Mission and a colt foal by Will Take Charge to bat for her in future.

Lusitania

4yo b m Declaration Of War-Danehill Music (Danehill Dancer)

Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent

Originally a 65,000gns Tattersalls December foal purchase by Green Lantern Stables, Lusitania failed to win in five starts in the US but was a closing third on her last start in a maiden claimer at Delaware Park.

She is by Declaration Of War out of Group 3 Park Express Stakes winner Danehil Music, a well-bred daughter of Danehill Dancer who has also produced Listed-placed Seussical. There may be updates to the pedigree ahead, as the dam's yearling colt by Australia was bought by Joseph O'Brien for €72,000 at Goffs this month, while her two-year-old colt by the same sire is with Mark Johnston.

Lusitania is offered carrying her first foal, having been covered by Astern – an Australian Group 1 winner by Medaglia D'Oro – in February.

Red Herring

13yo b m Empire Maker-Bionic (Zafonic)

Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales

Part of a dispersal of Juddmonte's US-based mares, conducted by Mill Ridge Sales, Red Herring has plenty of progeny on the ground. There are no black-type performers among them yet, but there are the multiple winners Frontliner and Red Drum, as well as the three-year-old filly Clause, who won a Gulfstream maiden special weight for Chad Brown in February, and the two-year-old colt Redshank, who has been sent to Andre Fabre in France but has yet to run.

Red Herring is offered back in foal to Speightstown, the sire of Clause and Redshank, from which it might be inferred the operation was very pleased with the results of the earlier two matings. Could priceless updates be in the offing?

The mare herself is a dual-winning Empire Maker half-sister to Earl of Sefton Stakes winner and multiple Group 1-placed Phoenix Tower out of Bionic, a daughter of Zafonic who caused quite a stir when hacking up in a Goodwood maiden on what turned out to be her only start due to injury.

Flourish

12yo ch m Distorted Humor-Viviana (Nureyev)

Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales

This mare, another deemed surplus to requirements by Juddmonte, offers other breeders the chance to buy into one of the operation's most prestigious families.

She is by Distorted Humor – damsire of Arrogate, Elate and Constitution – out of French Listed winner Viviana, a daughter of Nureyev who has also produced Grade 1 winners Sightseek and Tates Creek as well as Quest To Peak, the dam of dual Guineas scorer Special Duty and granddam of Breeders' Cup Mile hero Expert Eye.

A winner at Saratoga and Churchill Downs for Bill Mott, Flourish has not yet lived up to her name at stud but neither has she disappointed, with multiple winners Kapellmeister and Mr Darcy on her record. She also has two-year-old and yearling sons by Into Mischief and a colt foal by Point Of Entry in the pipeline, and is offered in foal to Frosted.

Catchingsnowflakes

5yo b m Galileo-Sweeter Still (Rock Of Gibraltar)

Consigned by Royal Oak Farm

Every breeder should want a daughter of Galileo in their broodmare armoury, as even the lesser lights among them have produced high-class horses – often seeming to upgrade matings when paired with moderate sires.

Keeneland offers plenty of choice of Galileo mares this November but nine of them are confined to Book 1, and being supremely well bred and in foal to big names like Arrogate, Justify and War Front are sure to fetch a pretty penny.

But there are another ten offered from Book 2 onwards, all with varying claims, including Catchingsnowflakes, an unraced half-sister to Qatar Racing's exciting two-year-old Kameko out of Sweeter Still, a Grade 3-winning half-sister to Racing Post Trophy hero and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes third Kingsbarns. She is pregnant to English Channel.

Scattered Thoughts

5yo b m Scat Daddy-Conniption (Danehill Dancer)

Consigned by Tarleton Farm, agent

With Scat Daddy's final crop aged three, it is becoming ever more difficult for owners and trainers to buy stock by the outstanding but ill-fated sire to race. However, there are plenty of chances for breeders to add a Scat Daddy mare to their bands – 23 at Keeneland this November, to be precise.

One who catches the eye is Scattered Thoughts, an Irish-bred daughter of the winning Danehill Dancer mare Conniption who hails from Moyglare Stud's productive Talking Picture family, responsible for recent Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song.

She was a 220,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, which pays high tribute to her looks, and though she was no star on the track she did manage a Laurel Park maiden special weight win. She is sold with a cover by Mill Ridge Farm's highly thought of new sire Oscar Performance, a Grade 1-winning son of Kitten's Joy.

Ginger Nut

3yo ch f Sir Prancealot-Applauding (Royal Applause)

Consigned by Lane's End, agent

Ginger Nut showed commendable closing speed when she won the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint for Richard Hannon, and proved that no fluke when adding a highly competitive York nursery to her CV last year.

She was sold to race for John Sadler in America this year at three and recorded a decisive victory over the classy Wesley Ward-trained fillies Stillwater Cove and Chelsea Cloisters in a Keeneland conditions stakes.

The daughter of Sir Prancealot is sold as a racing or breeding prospect. She has the class to gain internationally recognised black type but should be in demand for passing on her innate speed with or without it.

Hip 3,189

Looking Glass

12yo b m Seeking The Gold-Jood (Nijinsky)

Consigned by Godolphin

There are countless examples of breeders hitting the jackpot thanks to a Godolphin cast-off, so the operation's draft at Keeneland this year warrants close attention.

One of the best-bred mares in the 25-strong consignment is Looking Glass, a Seeking The Gold half-sister to champion Fantastic Light and Prix Saint-Alary runner-up Hi Dubai.

She has hardly shone in her paddocks career yet, with just one minor winner among her first four runners, but there is time for that to change, and it is interesting to see her two-year-old filly by City Zip, named Hidden Emotion, having been sent to Saeed Bin Suroor. The mare also has a Street Boss yearling filly and More Than Ready colt foal following through, and she is offered back in foal to Street Boss.

Snirvana

5yo b m Elusive Quality-Snowgal (Galileo)

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency

Snirvana won at three for Freddy Head in France before being sent across the Atlantic to race for Patrick Biancone, for whom she finished fourth – albeit beaten in excess of seven lengths – in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes last year.

She is by Elusive Quality, whose daughters have produced the likes of Cotai Glory and No Nay Never, and her female family raises reasonable hopes of precious updates as her dam Snowgal, a Galileo half-sister to Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Preseli and 1,000 Guineas runner-up Snowfire, was sold to Rabbah Bloodstock for €210,000 two years ago and has a Zoffany yearling colt to run for her, while she was mated with no less than Shamardal last year.

Snirvana is offered in foal to Mo Town, a Grade 1-winning son of up-and-coming sire Uncle Mo.

Hip 3,682

Ripple Effect

4yo ch m Frankel-Windsurfing (Smart Strike)

Consigned by Lane's End, agent

What's this? A Frankel mare buried deep in the catalogue, in Book 6 of the sale? And from one of the best families in the stud book too?

Ripple Effect is indeed by the great unbeaten dual world champion and out of a Smart Strike half-sister to 1,000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters and to the dam of fellow Group 1 winner Chachamaidee. She can also claim the likes of Dubawi, High-Rise and In The Wings as close relatives.

So what's the catch? Well, she is an unraced mare out of an unraced mare, which is not to everyone's taste, and she is in foal on a May covering to Run Away And Hide, who stood at just $6,500 this year and would be an esoteric name to many European buyers. Still, she is only four so she should have a long breeding career ahead of her.

Chica La Habana

4yo ch m Havana Gold-Esloob (Diesis)

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency

A mare with a recent victory in a prestigious two-year-old race in Britain is due to come under the hammer long after multi-million dollar deals will have been struck for the Grade 1 winners and producers of Grade 1 winners, halfway through the penultimate day of selling in fact.

Chica La Habana won the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley, a race won by Attraction, Easton Angel and Flanders in earlier years and by Liberty Beach in 2019, on her two-year-old debut, beating the useful Maggies Angel and Rebel Assault in the process. She failed to grace a winner's enclosure again though, either at two in Britain or at three after being sent to race in America.

The daughter of Havana Gold and Fillies' Mile third Esloob (herself out of Yorkshire Oaks heroine Roseate Tern) is offered at Keeneland in foal for the first time, to English Channel.
