Shadwell's Sussex Stakes winner Mohaather was delivered his first Group 1 winner on Saturday when Mick Appleby's Big Mojo landed Haydock's Sprint Cup.

A winner of the Molecomb Stakes as a juvenile, the colt also finished fourth – beaten a length – in last year’s Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

The three-year-old added another Group 3 to his CV on his seasonal return in the Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes at Ascot in April and also finished an agonisingly close second in the Group 1 July Cup earlier in the season.

Ridden by William Buick for the first time in 11 starts, the three-year-old pulled clear of his 14 rivals to beat Wathnan’s fast-finishing pair Kind Of Blue and Flora Of Bermuda.

Bred by the Veitch family’s Ringfort Stud and The Ladies, the colt was purchased by Quirke Bloodstock and his owners Paul and Rachel Teasdale – who also owned Appleby’s Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Big Evs – for 175,000gns at the 2023 Tattersalls December Yearling Sale.

Big Mojo is the first foal out of the Listed-winning mare No Nay Never mare Jm Jackson, a sister to fellow Listed scorer Singforthemoment, winner North Wind and a half-sister to winner Jawhar – being out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Trans Island.

Following Big Mojo’s two-year-old season, the Teasdales, in partnership with Quirke, added Jm Jackson to their broodmare band, paying Ringfort Stud €480,000 for the daughter of No Nay Never at the 2024 Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale. The mare produced a colt by Mohaather’s sire Showcasing last February.

That was Jm Jackson’s third visit to the sales. She first fetched €58,000 from John Kilbride, son-in-law of Ringfort’s Derek and Gay Veitch, as a Tattersalls Ireland September Sale yearling before gaining black type at two for trainer Mark Johnston. She was then offered at the Arqana December Sales in 2021, where Hamish Macauley struck a private deal at €65,000.

Mohaather, who won the 2020 Group 1 Sussex Stakes over a mile on his final race start, is also the sire of Listed-winning duo Merveilleux Lapin and Yah Mo Be There.

The stallion stood the 2025 breeding season at Beech House Stud for a fee of £15,000.
