Ruler Of The World punching above his weight in vintage freshman sire crop
Nancy Sexton reflects on the Derby hero's stud career so far
Even before last weekend, there was a sense that this year’s freshman sires were a vintage crop.
One of the first names that springs to mind is No Nay Never, whose autumn has been peppered with Ten Sovereigns, All The King's Men and No Needs Never to go with those early flagbearers Land Force and Servalan. The fact that he is a fast option who is easy to use in today’s European thoroughbred population - ie in possession of a background that is free of Sadler’s Wells and Danehill - only serves to enhance his appeal.
Meanwhile, Kingman continues to impress alongside Sea The Moon. Persian King’s win in Saturday’s Autumn Stakes provided his sire with a fifth stakes winner, a tally that brought him level with No Nay Never's European score. Given that the quintet also includes the unbeaten Coventry Stakes winner Calyx and Dewhurst Stakes fourth Sangarius - a horse whose physical frame offers encouragement for a productive three-year-old season - the Juddmonte stallion looks set for a bold showing in the Classics next season.
