Rathbarry Stud has confirmed that the newly retired State Of Rest will head straight to the County Cork operation for next year's northern hemisphere breeding season.

The son of Starspangledbanner, whose four Group 1 wins include this season's Prince of Wales's Stakes, Prix Ganay as well as last year's Cox Plate, was retired on Monday due to an MRI scan revealing an issue. He is owned in a partnership and is expected to shuttle to Newgate Farm in Australia later in 2023.

A statement by Rathbarry said: "Rathbarry Stud would like to confirm Joseph O’Brien’s statement that State Of Rest will not travel to Australia this year to defend his Group 1 Cox Plate title and that he is retiring to stud for the 2023 breeding season.

"We would like to thank Joseph O’Brien and all his team at Carriganog Racing who have done such a wonderful job in campaigning State Of Rest so successfully at the highest level, including four Group 1 wins across three continents.

"Rathbarry look forward to State Of Rest’s arrival at the stud, where he will stand alongside Acclamation, James Garfield and Kodi Bear."

Bred by Tinnakill Bloodstock, which sold the four-year-old to Diamond Bloodstock for 45,000gns from the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, State Of Rest then made 60,000gns to Aiden O'Ryan and Joseph O'Brien from Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

State Of Rest is the second foal out of the unraced Quiet American mare Repose - a half-sister to Listed winners Echo River and Prince Alzain and from the family of American champion filly It's In The Air.

State Of Rest is in turn a half-brother to this year's Blue Wind Stakes scorer Tranquil Lady, a daughter of Australia.
