Quality pedigrees on show as Arqana's Autumn Sale bonanza begins
Sale kicks off with horses in training, with National Hunt stock selling after
The Arqana Autumn Sale gets under way on Monday, with quality and quantity through the four-day run in Deauville where no fewer than 20 per cent of the catalogued yearlings and stores are related to black-type performers.
The action kicks off at 11am local time (10am GMT) on Monday with a session dedicated to horses in training. Tuesday sees two-year-old stores and National Hunt-bred yearlings go under the hammer, the following day is also devoted to National Hunt-bred yearlings, while the final session is for foals and broodmares.
Monday's opening salvo has been boosted by a number of eyecatching wildcards, including this season's Group 3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil winner Djo Francais (lot 364), a consistent son of Intello who will be offered by Jean-Claude Rouget.
The four-year-old, fourth on his last start in the Group 3 Prix Perth, is a half-brother to Listed winner Shutterbug and is closely related to Group 2 Prix Hocquart winner Port Guillaume.
Another Flat black-type winner on offer is Ombreville's Niagaro (376), a 15-length winner of the Listed Silbernes Band der Ruhr at Mulheim last month.
The three-year-old son of Adlerflug is a half-brother to German 1,000 Guineas heroine Novemba and from the family of triple Group winner Nordico.
Established National Hunt performers heading under the Arqana hammer include Jerome Delaunay's In The Box (389). By Jukebox Jury and a half-brother to Auteuil Listed winner Campero, the four-year-old was a seven-length winner on his first start over hurdles last month. He is from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Delta Work.
Another notable lot on the opening day, and preceding In The Box into the ring, is Alain Couetil's Jackpot D'Athou (388), a three-year-old by Doctor Dino and a close second on his bumper debut. He is a full-brother to the dual Graded AQPS winner Hester D'Athon.
Some smartly bred youngsters take centre stage on the second day, including Presente par Placiere's two-year-old Pastorius half-brother to Grade 1 Prix Renaud du Vivier winner Rock Noir (421); Haute Benaudiere's Saddex half-sister to Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle winner Messire Des Obeaux (429); and Cote Fleurie's Great Pretender half-sister to Irish Champion Hurdle winner Petit Mouchoir (467).
The yearling offerings on Tuesday and Wednesday include Haras de la Haie Neuve's half-brother to Grade 1-winning chaser and prolific hurdler Sceau Royal (582); Haras du Lieu des Champs' Goliath Du Berlais half-sister to Grade 1 winners Milord Thomas and Martinstar (589); and Haras de l’Hotellerie's half-brother to dual Ryanair Chase hero Allaho (721).
Also among the yearlings selling in Deauville are Haras du Brem's Saint Des Saints colt out of an unraced half-sister to dual Champion Chase hero Sprinter Sacre (623); Haras des Pierres Follets' Ivanhowe colt out of a Saddler Maker half-sister to Aintree Bowl winner Nacarat (673); and, bringing the curtain down on Wednesday, one of the first yearlings by the popular stayer Marmelo, out of Cat Junior's daughter Isopyre (722).
The final day of the auction revolves around foals and mares, with the quality continuing right to the end.
Among the mares are Elevage Cypres' Glady, a winning Rail Link half-sister to Grade 1 winner Bipolaire who is in foal to Haras de Cercy sire Karaktar (730); Haras du Berlais' Polly's Present, a full-sister to the great Denman and the dam of classy performer Hearts Are Trumps (791); and Haras de Saint Voir's Authorized mare Innumerable, out of Listed winner Dom Alco and from the immediate family of Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle winner Bacardys (847).
Haras de Cordelles offers a Doctor Dino foal half-brother to dual Grade 1-winning hurdler Theleme (843), while Haras de la Tuilerie's Latrobe half-brother to Triumph Hurdle winner Farclas (927) will also likely attract plenty of interest.
