No Nay Never in the limelight as progeny enjoy red-hot July

All told July was a fine month for Coolmore's second-season sire No Nay Never, with Ten Sovereigns' win in the July Cup helping to push his sire towards the million-pound mark in total progeny earnings in Britain and Ireland this season.

The son of Scat Daddy enjoyed further Pattern success last month as Mystery Power landed the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting, while Servalan and Shadn won in Listed company.

That impressive level of progeny performance follows on from a strong June for No Nay Never, when Arizona won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes to become the sire's first winner at Royal Ascot.

No Nay Never, who added his own name to the Norfolk Stakes roll of honour in 2013, came close to siring a second when Celtic Beauty found only Daahyeh too tough in the 25-runner Albany Stakes.

No Nay Never's juveniles appear to be firing on all cylinders and there have been others - aside from such promising sorts as Arizona, Celtic Beauty, Mystery Power and Shadn - who displayed plenty of promise in maiden and novice races in July.

Among them is the colt Vitalogy, who claimed the scalp of his highly-respected rival Arranmore on debut at Naas, having been purchased by his owner Fergus Galvin - a manager at Hunter Valley Farm in Kentucky - for €120,000 at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale.

Nope, a juvenile No Nay Never filly, entered plenty of notebooks having scored impressively at Fairyhouse the previous week.

Juvenile juggernaut

In Britain, Royal Commando had the measure of his two-year-old rivals when powering to a three and a quarter length victory in a Doncaster maiden.

Others to advertise the prowess of their sire in the juvenile sphere in July have been first-time out winners Never In Paris, Ventura Lightning and Verboten, while Fleeting Prince, Mitty's Smile and Stone Circle also found their way to the winner's enclosure.

Jean-Claude Rouget appears to have made a shrewd Arqana October acquisition in the €80,000 filly Baga, a juvenile who remains unbeaten after recording her second win in what looked a competitive conditions race at Longchamp.

The most expensive yearling by No Nay Never sold to date was the colt out of Muravka who realised 850,000gns from JS Company at Book 1 of the 2017 Tattersalls October Sale.

The smart three-year-old and half-brother to The Wow Signal scored twice at Hakodate in July, which brings his record to three wins in six starts for prize-money in excess of £300,000.

Sizzling display

No Nay Never's sole crop of Chilean-bred runners, who were conceived when he shuttled to Haras don Alberto for the 2015 southern hemisphere season, have also done much to enhance their sire's reputation.

From a small, select crop of 41 foals in Chile, 12 of his 22 runners have won to give No Nay Never a healthy winners-to-runners strike rate of 55 per cent, and he ranked third behind Shanghai Bobby and Gemologist in the 2018-19 first-season sire table.

His offspring in South America are led by the promising Brooke, who made it two from two when winning the Group 3 Cotejo de Potrancas at Club Hipico Santiago in April, and the Group 3-placed Parque Conguillio, with both colts bred by Haras don Alberto.

No Nay Never has been quick off the mark as a second-season sire in Chile with Diocleziano, El Asesino, Lake Louise, Luccina and Victorius Men all successful at Santiago in July, the first month of the season.

Four of those five three-year-old winners were bred by Haras don Alberto, while Luccina was bred by Haras Viejo Perro.

After his fee increased fourfold to €100,000 this year, No Nay Never's progeny are subject to an extra level of scrutiny compared to the offspring of other sophomore sires, although if they have many more months like July there will be little cause for concern at Coolmore.
