Nancho provided a major boost for both Hungarian racing and his sire Tai Chi by holding on in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern in Munich on Sunday.

Already a winner of a top-level domestic event at Kincsem Park, the four-year-old gelding burst onto the scene in Germany a fortnight ago when forging seven and a half lengths clear in the Group 3 Baden-Wurttemberg-Trophy.

Given a similarly pugnacious ride by Bayarsaikhan Ganbat in the mile and a half event, he had enough in the locker to foil the late challenge of Ralph Beckett’s Manuela De Vega.

Nancho, a €9,000 purchase by Tamas Siklosi, was consigned by Gestut Ohlerweiherhof as a son of its stallion Tai Chi, a champion German juvenile in 2011 who finished third in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

Tai Chi’s known numbers from four crops of racing age are tiny; only 15 are reported from Nancho’s year.

The son of High Chaparral has, however, had five stakes winners in Germany including Poldi’s Liebling, who lifted a Group 3 at Krefeld.

Buyers are still appreciating Tai Chi, who stood for €4,500 this year, and one of his sons was the top lot at the second session of the recent BBAG event, selling for €61,000.
