Marley and Cullinan widening their Global Spectrum at Tattersalls
Breeze-up consignors preparing to offer Qatar winner's half-brother
Global Spectrum’s lucrative mission to Qatar on Saturday could have further rewards to those further up the production line with the breeze-up consigning team of Roger Marley and John Cullinan preparing to sell his half-brother in the spring.
The French Classics are thought to be on trainer Gay Kelleway’s agenda after the still unbeaten son of Dutch Art came with a well-timed run to steal the Al Biddah Mile in Doha.
It recouped the lion’s share of the 130,000gns for which Global Spectrum was signed for by Charlie Gordon-Watson on behalf of Dr Johnny Hon at last year’s Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up.
Marley, who runs Church Farm Stables in Yorkshire, admits he and Cullinan’s Horse Park Stud had luck on their side that day.
"Newsells Park Stud offered him for sale at Arqana the previous August and he didn’t make what they wanted so John and I took a share off Newsells Park to breeze him for them. John had him initially from August to January, then I had him until the sale in April.
"He was quite scopey and very, very good-looking. We always just wanted a little bit of time, which is why he went to the Guineas rather than an earlier sale.
"He always worked well at home but he disappointed on the day at the breeze. We’d been expecting good things but he didn’t turn up on the day. Fortunately it was such a good pull out in the yard that Gay Kelleway and Charlie Gordon-Watson fell in love with him."
"We bought his Kodiac half-brother, who wasn’t sold in the ring at Doncaster again in August," Marley explained. "He was in the first 20 lots on day one, we went and spoke to Julian Dollar [of Newsells] and agreed a price privately.
"He’s a lovely colt and is going to the Craven sale. None of mine start galloping yet but I’ve had him five weeks, the same thing after John had him.
"He’s a very strong colt, different from Global Spectrum. He’s not as tall or as scopey at all but you wouldn’t expect that from a Kodiac. He’s a real bull of a horse - looking at him and looking at the Kodiac influence you’d expect him to be quicker and more of a sprinter."
