One of the final unfortunate twists of JT Lundy’s turbulent tenure at the helm of Calumet Farm was the purchase of Derby winner Secreto.

The cheapest of Northern Dancer’s yearlings to sell in 1982, when less than perfect conformation restricted his value to a bid of $340,000 from Luigi Miglietti, Calumet paid $25 million for a half share in Secreto a month after his Derby victory, which had been won narrowly at the controversial expense of El Gran Senor.

In Secreto, Calumet had the perfect vehicle to maintain inflated values and indeed he was somehow officially appraised at $75 million as 1988 drew to a close.
