Juddmonte to unleash Galileo daughter out of dual Guineas heroine Special Duty
Elegant Verse catches the eye at Newmarket but faces stiff test on her debut
It’s all round quite an intriguing-looking Friday for Juddmonte, and after the ITV4 cameras have stopped roiling at the Rowley Mile the esteemed operation have the debut of homebred Elegant Verse to look forward to.
The three-year-old looks a great ride for Benoit de la Sayette to have picked up from the stable of John and Thady Gosden in the Betfair Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4.10), being a son of the late great Galileo out of dual 1,000 Guineas heroine Special Duty.
Neither sire nor dam need elaborating on, while Elegant Verse, who starts off over ten furlongs, is a half-sister to the Listed-placed South Bank, by Tapit, and Colonial Downs winner Hypnotist, by Malibu Moon.
Hers is a Classic pedigree if ever there was one, though the filly holds no fancy entries and has presumably taken time to come to hand.
It will be interesting to see how she fares on the track where her mother was awarded the 1,000 Guineas at this meeting a dozen years ago by the stewards, after finishing second to Jacqueline Quest.
Elegant Verse is joined in the line-up by stablemate Complementary, a daughter of Churchill who was a 115,000gns buy from Tally-Ho Stud at Tattersalls Book 1 last autumn. She runs for Sheikh Hamed Dalmook Al Maktoum.
The other newcomer is Godolphin homebred Light Of Peace, by their linchpin stallion Dubawi out of dual Group 3 winner Majestic Queen. As such, Light Of Peace is a full-sister to Maria Amalia, winner of a Listed contest at Dusseldorf plus three other races.
Of those with experience, Craig Bennett’s homebred Voodoo Queen, by Frankel out of Albany and Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Cursory Glance, will be a tough opponent after finishing third and second on her two runs, as will another Juddmonte homebred in Picual, by Lope De Vega and out of a half-sister to New Bay. She was runner-up at Newcastle on her second start last backend.
Talking of Newcastle and Juddmonte homebreds, in the Quinnbet Novice Stakes (5.35) over an extended mile later on Friday, Capstan, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, catches the eye on his debut in what looks a decent little race.
The three-year-old son of Kingman is out of Sandown maiden winner Arizona Jewel, and is a half-brother to York Listed winner Desert Diamond.
It is a typically deep Juddmonte family, and while the dam was lightly raced and didn’t win anything more than that maiden, she is very well-related being a full-sister to Ribblesdale winner Riposte and a half-sister to dual top-level winner Powerscourt, Group 3 winner Last Train and dual Listed winner Kind, who is of course the dam of Frankel.
Dubawi’s Wood Ditton winner Francesco Clemente sets a very high standard in this contest, while Highclere homebred Lysander and King Power’s 210,000gns purchase Sonnerie Power are also from powerful Newmarket stables.
