Win Carnelian causes a stir with shock victory in the Sprinters Stakes

The victory was the first top-flight success for Kosei Miura, who holds the JRA record for most wins in a season by a rookie jockey, and has ridden more than 1,100 winners in his 18-year JRA career. He rode Win Carnelian in this year's Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan and was denied by Believing in finishing second by three-quarters of a length.
Win Carnelian is a son of Japan Cup hero Screen Hero and out of the winning Meiner Love mare Cosmo Crystal. This was his ninth win from 33 starts, his victories also including two Grade 3 strikes for owner Win Co Ltd, trainer Yuichi Shikato and breeder Cosmo View Farm.

Miura said: "It's been a long time. Having ridden him for a while, I was confident I knew the rhythm that would suit him best, so I was thinking only about that, regardless of the starting position. In the duel up the straight, I just said, 'Please, Carnelian, please'.
"As I rode him, I remembered all the things that have happened as I've been paired with him for so long. At eight, his chances are getting fewer, so I rode him thinking I wanted to help him win."
On his first victory in his 127th JRA Grade 1 race, Miura added: "There was a time when I thought I wouldn't win one, but on the other hand I had some owners and so many fans who supported me even though I hadn't won after 126 races. They never gave up on me."
