Archipenko, the Group 1 winner and sire of Sunday's impressive Hong Kong Cup hero Time Warp, has died at the age of 13 following a brief illness.

"He had a brief illness due to a rare, rapid and aggressive lymphoma," said Lanwades Stud owner and manager Kirsten Rausing. "This is a fatal condition that is, sadly, untreatable. Until shortly before his death Archipenko had been in good health and in fact successfully covered mares to southern hemisphere time at Lanwades.

"Archipenko, as good looking as he was well-bred, was a delightful individual to deal with and he is an enormous loss to Lanwades and the European thoroughbred breeding industry in general."

Bred by Eagle Holdings, Archipenko was by Kingmambo and out of Bound, a Listed-winning daughter of Nijinsky who is also the granddam of 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic conqueror Blame.

Bound is a sister to Number, who was distinguished both as a racemare, with a pair of Grade 2 wins, and a broodmare, with two sire sons having supplied Group 1 winners. Their dam was the deeply influential Special, dam of Nureyev and granddam of Sadler’s Wells.

Archipenko was trained by Aidan O'Brien in the earlier part of his career to win the Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown, where he also won a 7f maiden by an emphatic six lengths.

Switched to the Mike de Kock's yard as a four-year-old, Archipenko's greatest triumph came in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin in the colours of owner Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, earning a Racing Post Rating of 122 - the same figure he achieved for his win in the Summer Mile and his third in the Dubai Duty Free the same year.

Archipenko was retired to Lanwades Stud in 2010 and also stood one southern hemisphere season at Haras La Quebrada in Argentina in 2012, where he was crowned champion first-season sire in 2016.

From five crops of racing age the son of Kingmambo has sired Group 1 winners on three continents, following the success of Lanwades homebred Madame Chiang in the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot in 2014 and Forty One's win in the Gran Premio General in Argentina.
