Present Tense, a three-year-old Bated Breath half-sister to ace miler Kingman, scored in the mile fillies' maiden at Yarmouth on Wednesday - but only just, as she made all and held on by a short-head from Gakku. The pair stretched eight lengths clear of the third.

Present Tense, seventh on debut last month, had the advantage of experience over newcomer Gakku, a Pivotal filly out of a half-sister to Athasi Stakes winner Prima Luce trained by Roger Varian for owner-breeder Nurlan Bizakov.

Bizakov's homebreds from his Hesmonds Stud have been in good form in recent weeks, with Tomyris (an Invincible Spirit filly out of Matron Stakes fourth Totally Devoted) and Serenada (an Azamour sister to Musidora Stakes winner Liber Nauticus) both winning maidens.

But at Yarmouth it was the turn of Khalid Abdullah's homebred Present Tense, and her victory enhanced her already significant value as a broodmare.

The John Gosden-trained filly is one of three winners out of the Zamindar mare Zenda - winner of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and Coronation Stakes – alongside Tercentenary Stakes scorer Remote (by Bated Breath's sire Dansili) and Kingman.

A son of Invincible Spirit also trained by Gosden, Kingman lit up the 2014 Flat season with impressive victories in the Greenham Stakes, Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois.

Kingman now stands at Abdullah's Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket - his first yearlings are set to sell this year – alongside his close relation Oasis Dream and Present Tense's sire Bated Breath.

Zenda is a half-sister to champion two-year-old and sprinter Oasis Dream out of Hope, a sister to Irish Oaks heroine Wemyss Bight (the dam of four-time top-flight winner Beat Hollow), to the dam of high-class siblings Coastal Path, Martaline and Reefscape, and to the granddam of Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay.

Zenda has a two-year-old colt by Frankel called First Eleven, a yearling colt by Frankel and a colt by Dubawi born in March.

Present Tense is the 14th three-year-old winner for Bated Breath, a half-brother to the top-class Cityscape who won the Temple Stakes and finished second in four Group 1 sprint contests.
