Humidor makes it a dozen individual Group 1 winners for Teofilo

Humidor followed in the footsteps of the likes of Lonhro, Makybe Diva and Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente to become the latest winner of the Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday.

The four-year-old gelding had more in front than behind rounding the home turn, before charging past the field in the final two furlongs to see off Jameka, a daughter of Myboycharlie, by half a length.

In third was the European export Exospheric, an entire son of Beat Hollow, who raced in Europe as Exosphere. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he was an easy winner of the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in 2016.

In landing the valuable prize Humidor became a 12th Group 1 winner for Teofilo at the highest level, with the son of Galileo having also been the source of Antipodean top-level winners Kermadec, Palentino and Queensland Derby hero Sonntag.

Bred by Jomara Bloodstock, Humidor is out of the winning Zabeel mare Zalika, who is a half-sister to Macau Derby runner-up Heart Ofthe Desert.

Zalika's granddam is Habibti, a top-class sprinter in Europe who landed the King's Stand Stakes, the July Cup and Prix de l'Abbaye in the 80s.

Teofilo has also produced winners of three of the five Irish Classics, including Derby hero Trading Leather, 1,000 Guineas winner Pleascach and St Leger scorer Voleuse De Coeurs.

He is currently standing his tenth breeding season at Darley's Kildangan Stud, where his fee is €40,000.

Teofilo stood at Darley in New South Wales in Australia for five years from 2009 to 2013 at a fee of A$22,000, and returned last year after a two-year absence, with his fee doubled to A$44,000 (£27,275/€31,095).
