Group race double at Goodwood for seven-time champion sire
Ulysses leads home a 1-2 for the stallion in the Gordon Stakes
This season has already proved a sensational one for Coolmore's champion sire Galileo, and on Wednesday the eighteen–year–old stallion demonstrated his dominance on the Goodwood Downs with a Group race double, headed by the victory of The Gurkha in the feature Sussex Stakes.
Unraced as a two–year–old, The Gurkha has quickly proved himself to be among the best three–year–old colts, running out a devastating five–and–a–half length winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) at Deauville in May on just his third start, followed by narrow runner-up finishes in the St James's Palace Stakes and Eclipse Stakes.
On Wednesday, the Aidan O'Brien–trained colt reversed placings with his Royal Ascot conqueror Galileo Gold to run out a neck winner of his second Group 1, in the process becoming the fourth winner of the Goodwood feature for his sire following the successive victories achieved by the great Frankel in 2011 and 2012 and Rip Van Winkle in 2009.
