Frankel debutant and Speciosa colt catch the eye at Yarmouth
Plenty of well-bred newcomers in competitive 7f maiden
With all of the nine runners in the 7f novice stakes at Yarmouth on Wednesday (6.15) unraced, pedigree study will be at a premium and there is an interesting variety of sires on show – from renowned juvenile sources Acclamation, Dark Angel and Kodiac, to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Azamour and unbeaten dual world champion Frankel.
The four with the most impressive pages are headed by Baghdad, the latest debutant by Frankel who will be unleashed by Charlie Fellowes.
The colt is out of the placed Darshaan mare Funny Girl, who has already produced three performers with a Racing Post Rating of 100 or higher – Group 2 Prix de Sandringham winner and Sun Chariot Stakes third Laugh Out Loud; dual Listed scorer Suzi's Decision; and useful handicapper Pippa Greene.
Baghdad was bred by Haras de Saint Pair and bought by his owner Mohammed Bin Hamad Khalifa Al Attiya for €300,000 at last year's Arqana August Yearling Sale.
Pam Sly is set to use the race to introduce the latest offspring of her rags-to-riches 1,000 Guineas heroine Speciosa.
Dark Spec is by Dark Angel – sire of Saturday's July Cup winner Harry Angel – and is a half-brother to three winners, though none have shown their dam's outstanding ability.
Sir Michael Stoute unveils a colt with a very current pedigree.
Radio Source is a Raven's Pass half-brother to Araaja, who won the Listed Prix Madame Jean Couterie at Vichy on Monday. Another half-brother, Tom Melbourne, finished placed in Group 3 company in Australia this southern hemisphere season.
Radio Source was bred by Rathregan Stud out of Roshanak, a winning Spinning World half-sister to Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente, and was bought on behalf of owner Robert Ng for 120,000gns from Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year.
Concluding the quartet of pedigree picks at Yarmouth is The Last Emperor, an Azamour half-brother to Agent Murphy, a five-length winner of the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes who also finished second to Order Of St George in the Irish St Leger.
The Last Emperor was bred by Wellsummers Farm out of Raskutani, an unraced Dansili half-sister to high-class two-year-olds Blue Bayou and Hatta Fort.
He was bought by his trainer Roger Varian on behalf of owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum for 230,000gns at Book 2 last year.
The race looks a competitive event and whichever horse wins or runs well could be one to follow in future.
