Frankel breaks new ground as Solo Saxophone becomes his first jumps winner
Flat-bred colt strikes on debut for Dan Skelton at Catterick
As a three-year-old son of Frankel you might expect to see Solo Saxophone plying his trade on the Flat. But on Tuesday he created his own piece of history by becoming Frankel's first winner over jumps when landing the Support The Injured Jockeys Fund Juvenile Hurdle at Catterick.
Trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by his brother Harry, the hurdling debutant was off the bridle as the race entered its closing stages but soon made up ground to reel in the leader Outcrop before he pulled clear to win by four lengths.
It was only in October that Brendan Bashford and Ryan Mahon picked up the colt for €62,000 from the Goffs Horses in Training Sale. He had shown fair form on the Flat for his previous connections, trainer Dermot Weld and owner-breeder Moyglare Stud, when finishing in the frame on four occasions.
Despite showing plenty of the kind of resolution we have come to expect from the progeny of Frankel, Solo Saxophone's pedigree boasts plenty of speed. He is the fourth foal out of Society Hostess, a Grade 3 winner over 6½f, while he is a half-brother to Sailors Swan, a son of Henrythenavigator who was Listed placed over 6f.
There is more stamina in his further family, however, as the the likes of Melbourne Cup hero Media Puzzle, Grade 1 scorer Rich Tapestry and another Moyglare Group 1 scorer in Casual Conquest appear on his page. His pedigree also traces back to Refuse To Bend.
For those that think Frankel may be capable of supplying a Cheltenham Festival scorer before he sires a Classic or Royal Ascot winner, Solo Saxophone is available at 33-1 for the Triumph Hurdle.
