First-season sire Finjaan is off the mark thanks to the victory of his son Finsbury Park in the 7f novice auction stakes at Sandown on Wednesday.

Finsbury Park is trained by Robyn Brisland for the Franconson Partners, the entity that stands Finjaan at Gazeley Stud in Newmarket.

He was bred by Maze Rattan Limited out of the placed Barathea mare Fonnie, a half-sister to Norfolk Stakes third Crown Dependency from the family of Group-winning two-year-olds Always Hopeful, Colmore Row, Long Row and Rag Top, high-class sprinter Mind Games and Irish Oaks heroine Possessive Dancer.

Finsbury Park was knocked down to Richard Venn Bloodstock for 2,200gns as a yearling at last years' Tattersalls July Sale.

His sire was originally trained by Marcus Tregoning for Hamdan Al Maktoum, and won the Molecomb Stakes and finished third in the Dewhurst Stakes at two.

At three he finished ninth to Sea The Stars in the 2,000 Guineas and beat Balthazaar's Gift to take the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

He was later trained by Doug Watson in Dubai before retiring to Gazeley Stud.

Finjaan is by Royal Applause, whose son Acclamation has excelled at stud and has in turn supplied another prolific sire in Dark Angel.

He produced a first crop of 30 foals who are two-year-olds this year.
