Battaash stopped the clock in under a minute in the 5f Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown on Saturday to set a new race record and also give Lawman a first Group winner as a broodmare sire.

The three-year-old Dark Angel gelding was following up on his success in the Listed Scurry Stakes over course and distance last month.

Trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by Dane O'Neill, Battaash led for most of the way before powering clear up towards the line, ahead of the Oasis Dream pair of Mirza and Goldream.

Bred by Paul McCartan's Ballyphilip Stud, Battaash is out of the unplaced mare Anna Law, who also has an unraced two-year-old Intikhab colt named Littlelordconford and was covered by Gutaifan last year.

Anna Law is one of nine winners out of the winning Night Shift mare Portelet, who also produced the 7f Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner Etlaala and fellow stakes performers Selective, Back On Top and Button Moon.

In what appears to be a shrewd purchase, Ballyphilip acquired Anna Law from Hills for 14,000gns from the horses in training sales at Tattersalls in 2012, before sending her to Dark Angel in 2013, when he stood at a fee of €12,500.

The resulting foal was Battaash, a 200,000gns yearling purchase for Shadwell at Book 2 of the 2015 Tattersalls October Sale.

Battaash holds an early entry in the Group 2 Qatar King George Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes in August, both over the minimum trip.

Lawman - who was retired to Ballylinch Stud in 2008 after winning the Prix du Jockey Club - is starting to emerge as a broodmare sire having also supplied the dam of this year's Listed Carnarvon Stakes winner Visionary.

The son of Invincible Spirit is perhaps best known as the sire of Classic winners Just The Judge and Harbour Law.

McCartan, who also bred Vintage Stakes winner Xtension, had more to look forward to later on Saturday as he also bred A Huge Dream, the dam of the Nottingham novice stakes scorer Mrs Gallagher.
