Anglo-Irish double for broodmare Clenaghcastle Lady
Two-year-old Mattymolls Gaga set the ball rolling at Leopardstown
Chantilly trainer Jonathan Pease trained the £21,000 breeze-up buy Clenaghcastle Lady during an uninspiring two-year-old campaign. A switch to the Irish base of Adrian Costello at three triggered little improvement, with the filly retiring unplaced in six starts.
But, despite her inauspicious beginnings, July 20 2017 will go down as a red letter day for the daughter of Acclamation, as both of her offspring passed the post in front to give a nice boost to breeder David McCarthy.
The first leg of the double came when two-year-old Mattymolls Gaga broke his maiden at the second time of asking in the second race at Leopardstown on Thursday. The son of Dragon Pulse kept on resolutely to win the 7f maiden auction event for Jessica Harrington from the fast finishing The Broughie Man, a son of Cityscape.
Mattymolls Gaga was a 22,000gns Tatterstalls Book 3 purchase for Pat Turley from the draft of Fosterfield Lodge, and races in the black and orange colours of Arion Racing Club and Andrew and Gemma Brown.
A couple of hours later Lord Clenaghcastle did his bit to uphold the family's honour when staying on well to win the last at Epsom, a handicap over 1m½f. In doing so, Mattymolls Gaga's year-older half-brother by Big Bad Bob, recorded his first win of the season. The €6,500 Goresbridge breeze-up has now won three of his seven starts and has placed on two other occasions for owner for Michael Baldry and trainer Gary Moore.
This family descends through the Indian Ridge mare Indienne and also includes Group 3 Futurity Stakes scorer St Clair Ridge and US Grade 2 winner Cat By The Tale.
