Alghabrah could help solve maiden puzzle
Awtaad half-sister lines up at Leopardstown on Sunday
The mile maiden for two-year-old fillies at Leopardstown on Sunday (1.50) has thrown up two subsequent Pattern scorers in its three-year history - including last year's Ribblesdale Stakes winner Even Song - and this year's renewal may well unearth another with a plethora of blueblooded runners set to line up.
Among the seven debutantes in the 18 runner-field are siblings to Irish Classic scorers Awtaad and Chicquita, and another filly out of Group 1-winning juvenile Proportional.
Alghabrah, a two-year-old Tamayuz filly, represents the same connections as her top-class half-brother Awtaad.
The son of Cape Cross landed last year's Irish 2,000 Guineas, followed up with a Group 2 win on Irish Champions Weekend and is now offered to breeders at a fee of €15,000 at his owner Hamdan Al Maktoum's Derrinstown Stud.
Tamayuz supplied another mile Classic winner this year as daughter Precieuse won the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches in May, while another daughter, Blond Me, landed the EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine last weekend.
Magic Wand has an equally exciting profile, being a closely related sister to 2013 Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, out of Listed-winning Dansili mare Prudenzia. Chicquita raised the roof at Goffs when selling for €6 million as part of the Paulyn Dispersal in 2013.
Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Magic Wand was signed for at the Arqana August Yearling Sale for the sale-topping sum of €1.4m by Peter and Ross Doyle, MV Magnier and Mayfair Speculators.
The Galileo filly will be ridden by Seamie Heffernan and wears a tongue-strap.
Contigency plan
Another filly to catch the eye on paper is the Dermot Weld-trained Frankel filly Contingent. Weld also handled the career of her Listed-winning Sea The Stars half-sister Variable.
The Khalid Abdullah homebred is out of the 2008 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Proportional, a Beat Hollow sister to the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Vote Often, another to be trained by the master of Rosewell House.
