Double Classic success for Demuro brothers as Tokyo Gold wins Italian Derby

Brothers Mirco and Cristian Demuro were both in Classic-winning form on Sunday, with younger sibling Cristian matching his brother's earlier victory in Japan by partnering Tokyo Japan to success in the Derby Italiano at the Capannelle.

Mirco Demuro had kicked off a super Sunday for the family when securing a length success in the Japanese Oaks at Tokyo on Gold Ship filly Uberleben, a daughter of the Roses In May mare Meine Theresia and a half-sister to the Grade 2-placed Meiner Fanrong.

Cristian Demuro, hot from his success aboard Coeursamba in the French 1,000 Guineas the previous weekend, proved more than a match when riding Tokyo Gold to an easy success in the Group 2 Derby Italiano, providing Kendargent with a 14th individual Group winner in the process.

Tokyo Gold, who had struck in the Listed Prix Haras de Bouquetot last September, had finished fourth behind the promising Prix du Jockey Club hope Cheshire Academy, a son of Flintshire, in the Group 3 Prix Noailles at Longchamp in April.

The fifth foal out of Teruya Yoshida's Listed-winning Dalakhani mare Biancarosa, Tokyo Gold is a full-brother to Criterium de Saint-Cloud third Notte Bianca.

Biancarosa is herself a half-sister to three stakes performers, including Rolando and Italian Group 3 winner Rosa Del Dubai, the dam of Oaks d'Italia scorer Folega and Italian Listed scorer Fa Ul Sciur.

Kendargent has enjoyed a good start to the 2021 campaign, with last season's Qipco Champion Stakes runner-up Skallati winning the Prix d'Harcourt and Prix Exbury, while Skazino struck in the Prix de Barbeville at Longchamp earlier this month.

The 18-year-old son of French 2,000 Guineas hero Kendor currently stands at Haras de Colleville for a fee of €10,000.

Trainer Ralph Beckett saddled his first ever runner in the Italian Derby, Frankel's son Fabilis, who came home ninth of the 14 runners in a contest worth more than £250,000 to the winner.
