It’s hard to know where to start on Friday, with a cracking-looking fillies’ novice stakes opening proceedings at Newmarket, and eyecatchers across Britain and Ireland, but it’s not every day a half-brother to a Classic winner makes his debut, so let’s begin there.

Step forward Duelist, whose half-sister Billesdon Brook stunned her rivals in the 1,000 Guineas three years ago, beating Laurens by a length and three-quarters as a 66-1 shot. The Richard Hannon-trained filly consistently proved that no fluke, most notably when winning the Sun Chariot Stakes back on the Rowley Mile.

She was by Champs Elysees, while another half-sister, Billesdon Bess, by Dick Turpin, won the Listed Upavon Fillies’ Stakes at Salisbury.

The dam, Caplow, was acquired by Coolmore for a cool 2,100,000gns at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares sale, and now it's the turn of her son by Dubawi, Duelist, to take his first steps towards hopefully doing his famous family proud.

Likewise trained by Hannon and bred by the Stowell Hill partners headed by Jeanette McCreery, he contests the mile novice stakes at Goodwood (5.23) in which Juddmonte’s one-from-one homebred Definite sets a high bar.

Duelist is the mount of Sean Levey, who partnered his half-sister to Classic glory, and it will be exciting for all concerned to see how the juvenile fares.

An hour later on the Sussex Downs, Godolphin-bred three-year-old Well Spent is set to maker her debut in the colours of the Queen in the 1m2f fillies’ maiden. The daughter of Siyouni is out of Vale Of York mare Pleasemetoo, a Group-placed winner.

She is trained by the Gosdens and looks a nice ride for Nicky Mackay.

Over at the Curragh, Galileo’s juvenile son Sweden, out of Mastercraftsman mare Even Song, takes the eye in the opening mile maiden (4.15).

A Coolmore homebred, he is the second foal out of Even Song, winner of the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2016. In turn, Even Song is a half-sister to St Leger heroine Simple Verse.

Sweden has the assistance of Wayne Lordan in a race which features stablemate Bluegrass, the first foal of Quiet Reflection, by Galileo. He is the mount of Seamie Heffernan.

But back to that opener at Newmarket at 1,10. Only four of the 12 declared have any experience and from the newcomers there is pedigree potential pretty much every which way you turn.

Colourful Dream is a prime example. Bred by John Deer out of Galileo’s daughter Be My Gal, she cost Godolphin 520,000gn at Tattersalls October Book 1 last year.

The dam was decent, winning the Group 3 Prix de Psyche, and her filly by Dubawi looks one of the most likely of the debutantes to trouble her benchmark-setting stablemate Silk Romance, who was second on her debut at Kempton this month.

She is not by any means the only possible newbie winner, however, with another daughter of Dubawi, Yummylicious, also having a lot going for her on paper.

She is out of Montjeu mare Yummy Mummy, which makes her a sister to a couple of winners and a half-sister to none other than Legatissimo, the 1,000 Guineas heroine who also landed two further Group 1s in the Nassau Stakes and Matron.

Yummylicious is a Newsells Park homebred and in training with the Gosdens.

Qatar Racing’s silks, meanwhile, will be carried by Oheka (William Haggas) and Melody Cher (Sir Michael Stoute) in the seven-furlong contest.

Oheka was bred by Ecurie des Monceaux out of the Le Havre mare Qatar Power, and duly attracted the attention of David Redvers at last September’s Arqana Yearling Sale, who went to €240,000 to acquire her.

Qatar Power was a Listed winner at Maison-Laffitte, and her daughter by Kodiac is the mount of Richard Kingscote - given Kingscote’s links to Stoute, that might be a sign she is more forward than the owners’ Melody Cher, a daughter of Siyouni who will be partnered by Cieren Fallon.

Yet another of interest is Frankel’s daughter Queens Ballet, bred by Phoenix Thoroughbreds out of War Front’s daughter Ballet De La Reine, a half-sister to Listed winner Alluringly and for whom Queens Ballet is a first foal. She carries the silks of Fairlawns Racing for Peter Chapple-Hyam.

An hour and ten minutes later at Newmarket it is the turn of Godolphin homebred Tangled Words to make his debut in the 7f novice for colts and geldings.

By Dubawi out of Manduro’s daughter Linda Radlett, he is a half-brother to the six-time winner Fanny Logan, whose career highlight came when landing last year’s Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He represents the Charlie Appleby stable and is set to face five rivals, notably Sheikh Mohammed Obaid homebred Razzle Dazzle, who was a close second on his debut at Newmarket this month.
