Calumet Farm issues tariff for 2019 breeding season

Newcomer Ransom the Moon joins a Calumet Farm roster headlined by perennial leading sire English Channel in 2019 as the Lexington operation announced its stud fees for next spring.

English Channel, a six-time Grade 1 winner who took the 2007 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf, will stand for $30,000 next year. The son of Smart Strike has been offered for $25,000 since he entered stud in 2008 and continues to achieve success with proven runners on both turf and dirt.

In 2018, English Channel has sired 16 black-type winners, including Grade 1 winners Heart To Heart, Johnny Bear, Channel Maker, and Voodoo Song. His most recent stakes winner was Calumet's two-year-old homebred Flying Scotsman, who took the Grade 3 Cecil B DeMille Stakes on turf at Del Mar.

Ransom The Moon, a son of leading sire Malibu Moon, will stand for an introductory fee of $7,500. An Ontario-bred out of the Red Ransom mare Count To Three, from the family of Grade 1 winner Countus In, Ransom The Moon won the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Bing Crosby Stakes for trainer Phil D'Amato at Del Mar. He defeated two-time Breeders' Cup Sprint winner and Eclipse Award-winning male sprinter Roy H each time.

"He is beautiful, and if he replicates himself we are set," said the farm's Jak Knelman. "He is about 16.2 (hands) and has a beautiful neck and topline with a strong hip and hind leg. Looking at his profile, he looks like a classic distance horse, but he has the speed to win at six furlongs."

"Ransom The Moon possesses speed, an immense turn of foot, and class above all else," D'Amato said. "Those are the qualities I look for in a top-class racehorse. He's one of the most talented horses that I have ever trained."

After breeding 176 and 125 mares, respectively, Travers Stakes winner Keen Ice and Brazilian Triple Crown winner Bal A Bali, by Put It Back, enter their second years after strong books. Keen Ice will stand for $20,000, and Bal A Bali will be offered for $15,000.

Oxbow, winner of the 2013 Preakness Stakes, will be offered for $15,000 in 2019. The son of Awesome Again produced Grade 2 winner Coach Rocks in his first crop, and Grade 3 Tempted Stakes winner Oxy Lady has his second crop off to a fast start.

"Our roster features a wide variety of bloodlines possessing soundness, quality conformation, and a propensity to winning classic two-turn races on both dirt and turf," Knelman said. "We are focused not only on building long-term relationships with breeders but also sharing in the commercial and racing success of our stallions. I am certain we will have something to fit the needs of almost any breeder."
