350,000gns Tattersalls purchase Emissary settling in down under
The Kingman colt is a half-brother to 2010 Derby winner Workforce
Exciting staying prospect Emissary has entered work for trainer Michael Moroney, with the Flemington-based conditioner in no hurry to test his credentials on Australian soil.
The British-bred northern hemisphere three-year-old stretched his legs around Flemington earlier this week after completing two weeks of quarantine.
"He seems to have settled straight into it here, which is pleasing," Moroney said.
"We have had a fair bit of experience with imports now and we like to give them a feel of the new stable environment and systems straight out of quarantine, and this horse is very settled and cantering around as if he has been here all his life."
Moroney will be guided by Emissary's condition over the next month before determining how he could be campaigned during 2021, citing the example of last season's Listed Mornington Cup winner Aktau.
"We are not putting any pressure on him but he's settled in well so we will press on with him and see where he takes us," Moroney said.
"If we can get him to the races, we will give him the sort of light preparation we gave Aktau, but there is no rush.
"He's a lovely horse to be around and he has coped with the trip out in good order so we'll make our way quietly with him, but on what I have seen of him so far I am particularly pleased to have him in our team."
Emissary is a half-brother of 2010 Derby and Arc winner Workforce. The Kingman entire has raced five times for two wins and two minor placings, including a second placing to subsequent Derby runner-up Khalifa Sat on his second start in a Listed race at Goodwood in June.
His lone failure came in the Derby, when he was never in the hunt with cheekpieces applied for the first time. He finished 15th of the 16 behind all-the-way winner Serpentine.
Formerly trained by Hugo Palmer and raced by owner/breeder Khalid Abdullah, Emissary handles dry ground and quickened well off a quiet ride in his debut victory on the all-weather at Wolverhampton last year.
He comfortably led throughout, first time wearing a visor, in registering his second win on his latest start at Yarmouth on September 15.
