Newland's vacation takes him on a trip to the sales ground
He was convinced by Hubie de Burgh to soak up the sun at the auction
With a truly international buying bench on the Gold Coast sourcing future thoroughbred talent there are not many faces you would not expect to see here, with the possible exception of likes of those more concerned with training the winner of the Grand National than the Golden Slipper.
However, the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale is precisely where you would have found Dr Richard Newland on Thursday. The Grand National-winning trainer had met bloodstock consultant Hubie de Burgh while on the flight to Australia, and had been convinced to shun the beach and to come and soak up the sun at the sale.
Despite being armed with a catalogue, and his wife Laura seeming particularly keen on the idea, Newland insisted he was simply holidaying on the Gold Coast and had no intention of making any purchases, let alone relocating his training operation at Claines, just outside Worcester, to the other side of the globe.
“The whole concept of Magic Millions seems great and the prize-money at the race day looks great,” he said. “Although I’m just here on vacation. I’m not sure I could afford the kind of prices some of these yearlings are making!”
