Malone keeps it in the family as daughter takes first lessons in the trade
Memorable day at Leopardstown for eight-year-old Casey
While Tom Malone was busy securing stock for his clients at the Goffs Champions Sale on Saturday, not least top lot Izzy Bizu, a new name appeared alongside his own on the paperwork at the boutique auction.
It was that of the agent's eight-year-old daughter Casey, who was accompanying him to work for only the second time.
"I'd love for her to take part in the future," Malone admitted. "There's no time like the present for her to come with me and start learning about it. She loves it, she's started doing my catalogues and helping out with them. I showed her what I wanted done, picked the lot numbers - and she got it to perfection. So I thought: 'There you go.' Her present for getting it done was to come to the sales with me and get involved."
Casey's previous experience had been at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot June Derby Sale. This time, Malone could be seen showing her the finer points of the docket. It may be a while before she signs for herself, and for now the idea of her one day joining the business remains "any father's dream," but certainly Malone hopes to continue her education.
"As time permits, with school holidays and stuff, she will come along," he said. "Yesterday was just lovely because there were only three or four to look at, and she had a great day. It's like reading a book, the more she does it, the more it comes natural to a child."
