Kingman half-sister to Derby hero Wings Of Eagles gets off the mark

Sparkle Roll won by almost four lengths on just her second start

Sparkle Roll: near four-length winner at Haydock on Saturday
1 of 1

Sparkle Roll, a Kingman half-sister to last year's Derby hero Wings Of Eagles, looks to be a filly going places after the grey two-year-old opened her account in emphatic style on just her second start at Haydock on Saturday.

Bloodstock aficionados seeking similarities between the pair will be pleased to note Wings Of Eagles also broke his maiden on his second start and at a similar stage of his two-year-old career, in his case at Killarney in August.

Sparkle Roll, owned in partnership by Qatar Racing and Kin Hung Kei, was ridden by Nicky Mackay in the mile Smarkets British EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes, with almost four lengths separating the winner and Frankel filly Chartered at the line.

Sparkle Roll and Wings Of Eagles were bred by Gilles and Aliette Forien out of the Kendor mare Ysoldina, who finished third in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and is one of six stakes performers out of the brilliant producer Rotina.

Rotina is also noted as the dam of Prix Saint-Alary scorer Belle Et Celebre, Prix Jean Romanet winner Whortleberry and Scandinavian champion racehorse and sire Appel Au Maitre.

Sparkle Roll was knocked down to Meridian International and David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing, for €750,000 at last year's Arqana August Yearling Sale, less than three months after Wings Of Eagles had sprung a 40-1 surprise in the Epsom Classic.

Wings Of Eagles had been sold two years previously at the same venue for €220,000, with both siblings offered through the Foriens' Haras de Montaigu.

Ysoldina's colt by Holy Roman Emperor made €130,000 at the 2016 renewal and was subsequently purchased by Cheung Kwok Keung for HK$11 million at the Hong Kong International Sale earlier this year, a record for that auction.

The mare also has a colt foal by Siyouni at foot.
