'Kind by name and by nature' - dam of Frankel and Noble Mission dies aged 20

The daughter of Danehill was a star producer for Juddmonte

Juddmonte's outstanding producer Kind, the dam of the phenomenal Frankel and multiple Group 1 winner Noble Mission, has died at the age of 20 after foaling a colt by Kingman a few days ago.

The daughter of Danehill was a six-time winner for Roger Charlton and the late Khalid Abdullah, landing the Listed Flower of Scotland and Kilvington Stakes before taking up broodmare duties in 2006.

She visited Sadler's Wells for her maiden covering and produced Bullet Train, the winner of Lingfield's Group 3 Derby Trial and later a pacemaker for Frankel.

Bullet Train, who previously stood in Kentucky, is now a resident at Woodfield Farm Stud in County Waterford and has sired 144 individual winners so far, including Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes scorer Chapada and the Listed victor Whiskey Train.

Kind ultimately wrote herself into the history books when producing Frankel from her next covering. The Sir Henry Cecil-trained son of Galileo entered racing folklore when winning all 14 starts, including the 2,000 Guineas in an extraordinary front-running demolition plus nine other Group 1s, before being retired to Banstead Manor Stud to commence stallion duties in 2013.

Frankel: unbeaten in 14 starts and leading sire

The 13-year-old has sired 12 individual Group 1 winners to date, including dual Champion Stakes hero Cracksman, Oaks winner Anapurna and St Leger victor Logician, and reached 40 individual Group winners in the fastest time by any European stallion in history last year.

Kind's third mating - and second to Galileo - produced another top-class performer in Noble Mission. Initially trained by Cecil, for whom he won the Gordon Stakes in 2012, he later provided Lady Cecil with an emotional victory in the 2014 Champion Stakes, following on from Frankel's triumph two years previously. It was a particularly poignant success for his trainer after her husband's death from cancer in June 2013.

Among the star producer's other offspring are Joyeuse, a dual Listed-winning daughter of Oasis Dream who is responsible for Jubiloso, third in the Coronation Stakes, and the stakes-placed Jovial. The three-time winning Morpheus and Proconsul, a full-brother to Frankel, have also both embarked upon stallion careers.

Due to the rare achievement of producing two Group 1 winners and a further Group winner in Bullet Train, Kind’s name is on the IFHA’s International List of Protected Names.

Kind has a full-sister to Frankel and Noble Mission in training with John Gosden, the three-year-old Chiasma, although she slipped to Galileo (2014, 2015) and Kingman (2016, 2017) in recent years. She was barren in 2019 and slipped to Galileo last year, while she was due to revisit Kingman this term.

Kind: second generation Juddmonte homebred, being out of Rainbow Lake, a daughter Rainbow Quest

Juddmonte's UK stud director Simon Mockridge said: "I cannot thank the Rossdales and Juddmonte team enough for the tireless care they have given Kind. To many she will rightfully always be best remembered as the dam of Frankel and Noble Mission, to us at Juddmonte she will always be Kind by name and Kind by nature.”

Kind was a second generation Juddmonte homebred, being out of the dual Group 3 winner Rainbow Lake, a daughter of the influential Rainbow Quest. Rainbow Lake was out of Rockfest, who was purchased privately as part of a bloodstock package from the John ‘Jock’ Hay Whitney dispersal in 1983.

Kind's siblings included the Tattersalls Gold Cup and Arlington Million winner Powerscourt - a son of Sadler's Wells - the Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Last Train and Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Riposte, who joined the Juddmonte broodmare band along with her winning full-sister Arizona Jewel.
