'He ran a very nice race in the Becher Chase over the National fences'
John Dwan bred Lucinda Russell's Grand National runner One For Arthur
How did you acquire One For Arthur's dam Nonnetia? I specifically went to the July sales in France in 2006 [Goffs France] to look at her as she had won a three-year-old hurdle race and was by Trempolino, a broodmare sire I was attracted to. She was led out of the ring unsold at €3,000. I acquired her in a private deal shortly afterwards.
Do you think he can win the Randox Health Grand National? With the National, as we all know, you need an awful lot of luck in running. That being said, he's entitled to take his chance. He ran a very nice race in the Betfred Becher Chase over the National fences in December and his trainer Lucinda Russell has been very careful in mapping out his programme for Saturday. He has not run since winning the Betfred Classic Handicap Chase at Warwick in January, which I think is in his favour as the horse runs best when fresh. As long as the ground does not turn up too quick I'm hopeful he'll run a big race.
Have you previously bred any Aintree runners? If not, who is the best horse you've bred? This is the first National horse bred at Ballyreddin Stud. Our business is primarily a commercial one so mares and young-stock are traded on a regular basis. There are some nice National Hunt store horses on the farm, for example brothers and sisters to the likes of Altior, Welsh Shadow, Royal Shakespeare, Hammersly Lake, L'Ami Serge and Master Blueyes.
Why did you decide to send Nonnetia to Milan? My good friends at Grange Stud, David Magnier and Albert Sherwood, rarely let you out of the yard without agreeing to give them a mare! Milan was a young stallion at the time with very good credentials, being by Sadler's Wells from a good family. He was an excellent racehorse and with a rating of 125 he ticked most of the boxes for me.
What else have you bred out of Nonnetia? Nonnetia has a 100 per cent record to date from her runners, all four having won. Three geldings, all by Milan, and a filly by Oscar have won and Jerry Brummitt bought a nice three-year-old off me by Getaway at the Derby Sale last year. She has a Yeats yearling filly on the farm and has been covered and scanned in foal to Kayf Tara this year.
