Encosta De Lago sets new broodmare sire record in Australia
Son of Fairy King excelled through his daughters
Encosta De Lago has become the highest-earning broodmare sire in a single season in Australia after surpassing the previous record of A$17,262,161 (£10.2 million/€11.6m) set by Danehill in the 2010-11 season.
The son of Fairy King first rose to the top of the table at the end of the 2015-2016 season with earnings of A$16,725,854.
He is now sitting pretty with 268 winners from 637 runners and showing a healthy strike rate of 42 per cent, with earnings of around A$17.6m and the season drawing to a close.
That figure is in small part thanks to the Darley homebred Impending, who has contributed A$1,436,750 to that total after winning the prestigious Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap this month.
Impending is by Lonhro, sire of the 2012 Golden Slipper winner Pierro, out of dual Group 1 winner Mnemosyne.
At the top of the general sires table, Snitzel did not supply any millionaires in the latest season, however, his total of A$14,895,202 saw him set a new record. Street Cry would have broken the record any other season, with a total of $13,895,176, of which nearly half was attributable to the wondermare Winx.
Street Cry set the previous record in the 2015-16 season with a total of A$12,975,554 - with Winx again accounting for nearly half.
