Well Timed gives sire Holy Roman Emperor a second Classic in 2018

Well Timed provided her sire Holy Roman Emperor with his second Classic winner of the season and his 12th Group/Grade 1 winner in total with victory in the Preis der Diana at Dusseldorf on Sunday.

The filly was sent off favourite for the race, the German equivalent of the Oaks, following victory in the Group 2 Diana-Trial at Hoppegarten in June, the third race of an unbeaten three-year-old career.

She duly obliged for her owner-breeder Baron Georg Von Ullmann, trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho and jockey Filip Minarik.

Well Timed is the eighth living foal out of Wells Present, winner of the Listed Grosser Stutenpreis der Dreijahrigen over 1m3f.

By Cadeaux Genereux, the dam was bred by Von Ullmann out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Wells Whisper, a sister to Prix Lupin winner Johann Quatz and a half-sister to Hernando, successful in the Prix du Jockey Club and runner-up in the Arc.

Their dam is the Group 3 Prix du Calvados winner Whakilyric, who was also third in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret and is the dam of ten winners.

Wells Present is also a half-sister to Wonder Why by Tiger Hill, the dam of Akeed Mofeed, a son of Dubawi who won the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup.

Wells Present has a two-year-old colt by Soldier Hollow named Warrior and a yearling filly by Adlerflug. She was sold by Ronald Rauscher in foal to Motivator for just €4,000 at last winter’s Arqana Breeding Stock Sale.

Holy Roman Emperor is the sire of five Pattern winners so far in 2018, headed by Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Romanised.

The 14-year-old son of Danehill was retired to stud as a replacement for the subfertile George Washington after a two-year-old season that saw him win the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere and Phoenix Stakes.

His dam L’On Vite is an unraced daughter of Triple Crown legend Secretariat and Canadian and American champion three-year-old filly Fanfreluche, who also produced Canadian champion sprinter La Voyageuse; L’Enjoleur a five times Group 1 winner who was Canadian champion three-year-old; and Canadian champion two-year-old Medaille D’Or, who was a brother to L’On Vite.

It is also the family of multiple Australian champion sire Encosta De Lago.

Holy Roman Emperor’s sister is the Group 3 Tokyo City Cup winner and Australasian Oaks second Milanova, the dam of Group 3 Munster Oaks winner Pretty Perfect by Galileo.

Holy Roman Emperor’s first Classic winner was Homecoming Queen, who won the 1,000 Guineas in 2012, and he is also the sire of Hong Kong Group 1 stars Designs On Rome (from the same family as Romanised) and Beauty Only.

As well as his Classic pair, he is also the sire in 2018 of globe-trotting Glorious Empire, whose latest victory came in the Grade 2 Bowling Green Stakes at Saratoga last weekend.

He stood the 2018 breeding season for just €15,000 at Coolmore.
