The Whipmaster keeping a racing-mad golf partnership in the swing

Not many clues are required as to the influence behind The Whipmaster, who maintained his upward curve for the Gary Moore stable in winning the opening 1m2f handicap at Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard meeting on Thursday night.

The Mastercraftsman gelding, who doubled up in impressive fashion under Ryan Moore after opening his account for the season at Lingfield a fortnight ago, is both owned and bred by The Golf Partnership, a small group of friends of whom the whip master is the one looking after the drinks kitty at their social events.

They produced her out of the appropriately-named Birdie Queen, a Pastoral Pursuits mare and three-time winning sprinter for the same stable.

Warren Jupp, who has stepped forward as their spokesman, said: "We’ve all known each other for years now, we go for golfing holidays, and the only time we have a bad word to say about each other is when it comes to naming the horses.

"This horse is two from three this season so he’s started off well. He also had a third during Glorious Goodwood and been placed a couple more times."

Explaining their decision to go into breeding, Jupp added: "We bought Birdie Queen as a two-year-old, George Baker rode her quite a lot and he said she had a terrific temperament and was a good trier.

"Obviously with the connections Ryan has with Coolmore, we asked to go and speak to them. They were fantastic and basically we went over and had her covered by Canford Cliffs. That horse, Silver Cliffs, wasn’t that great, he was really quite small being the first foal.

"Then it was Mastercraftsman for The Whipmaster. He’s now won four times and is excelling and we’re really hopeful that we’ve got another one on the way in the two-year-old half-brother by Starspangledbanner. He hasn’t been named yet but he's hopefully going to be out soon."
