Ten up for Charm Spirit as well-bred Fulminate flies at Fairyhouse

Charm Spirit became the latest first-season sire to hit a double-figure number of winners across Europe when the well-related Fulminate showed her eye-catching pedigree has translated into significant talent as she landed a 6f maiden at Fairyhouse on Wednesday.

The filly was slowly into stride and soon found herself towards the rear of the 14-runner field, but with two furlongs to run Fulminate could be seen going notably well.

When a gap appeared she readily took advantage, and finished powerfully to deny the more experienced Coral Beach, looking value for more than the half-a-length margin of victory.

After the race Ger Lyons, who is in his first season training for Juddmonte, said: "She got the roll of the race but she had to be brave to do what she's done. All that I can think is that you can't beat pedigree.

"They are good honest horses and are ready to perform like that and to win is a bonus as I think there is plenty of improvement in these horses going forward, fingers crossed."

Fulminate, a Juddmonte homebred, is the ninth foal out of Quiff, who won the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks by no fewer than 11 lengths in 2004.

The daughter of Sadler's Wells, who in turn is out of the 1999 1,000 Guineas heroine Wince, has produced five winners since retiring to Khalid Abdullah's broodmare band, albeit none of those have achieved black type.

Her highest-rated progeny by Racing Post Ratings is The Great Gabrial, who has a career-high mark of 94.

However, Fulminate looks to possess the necessary ability to change that situation. Indeed she has already marked herself down as something out of the ordinary as far as Quiff's offspring are concerned, as none of her siblings managed to make a successful debut.

The ten winners from Charm Spirit's debut crop, conceived at Tweenhills Farm and Stud at a fee of £25,000, includes some notably smart types, headed by Charming Kid, who made a winning debut for Richard Fahey at York and was last seen finishing third to Advertise in the Group 2 July Stakes.

Charm Spirit - a three-time Group 1 winner by Invincible Spirit who stands alternate seasons at Tweenhills and Haras de Bonneval - is due to be represented by 112 juveniles during his freshman season, and currently sits in third in the European first-season sire table by number of winners, with only No Nay Never (11) and Bungleinthejungle (15) ahead of him.
