Smart Savarin heads a blueblooded band of Deep Impact juveniles in Europe

Champion Japanese racehorse and dominant sire Deep Impact – who died in July – demonstrated his international significance once again when daughter Savarin remained unbeaten with a decisive victory in the Group 3 Prix d'Aumale at Longchamp on Sunday.

Savarin, who is two from two for trainer Andre Fabre and owner Masaaki Matsushima, scored by three-quarters of a length from runner-up Secret Time (by Camacho) with Flighty Lady (by Sir Percy) in third in a bunch finish for the minor placings. The winner could return to the track next month for the Prix Marcel Boussac.

The filly was bred by Shadai Farm from Sarafina, a daughter of Refuse To Bend who was a triple Group 1 winner for owner-breeder the Aga Khan in the Prix Saint-Alary, Prix de Diane and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and was sold to Japan at the end of her racing career.

Savarin is Sarafina's fourth winner from as many foals and runners, with Group 3 Prix Messidor winner Geniale and Japanese Grade 3 scorer Go Timing – both also by Deep Impact – among her siblings.

Savarin and Geniale are part of a long tradition of Deep Impact success in France, which started when first-crop son Barocci won the Listed Prix Omnium II as a three-year-old in 2011.

One year later Barocci's full-sister Beauty Parlour landed the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, while others by the sire including Akihiro, Aquamarine, A Shin Hikari, Bartaba, Kizuna, Makahiki and Study Of Man have also scored at stakes level in France.

Such success encouraged other European owner-breeders to send mares to Deep Impact at Shadai Stallion Station or buy his stock at auction in Japan, with Saxon Warrior winning the Racing Post Trophy and 2,000 Guineas, September scoring in the Chesham Stakes and notching three Group/Grade 1 placings, and Love So Deep winning the Chalice Stakes and taking second in the Prix de Pomone this summer.

Consequently, Savarin is not the only Deep Impact two-year-old who we could see in Europe this season.

There is another unbeaten filly by the sire in Fabre's string, in the shape of Hidaka – an impressive winner of a hot looking mile contest for newcomers at Deauville last month on her sole start.

Hidaka, who carries the colours of her breeders the Wertheimer brothers, is the first foal out of Royalmania, a Listed-winning Elusive Quality half-sister to Prix Saint-Alary winner Queen's Jewel.

There are two other Deep Impact juveniles in training across the Channel but yet to make their debuts, according to France Galop.

Pascal Bary has in his care Il Brio, a colt out of Ryzhkina, in turn a daughter of Storm Cat and Lucky, a Group 3-winning Sadler's Wells sister to King Of Kings. He is trained for Japanese owner Hideshi Yamamoto, whose silks have been carried to big race victory by the likes of Casino Drive and Spielberg.

Francois Rohaut, meanwhile, is overseeing the career of Toscan Genius, a colt owned and bred by Al Shaqab Racing. He is the first foal out of Shagah, a daughter of Invincible Spirit who finished third in the May Hill Stakes.

In Britain, Marco Botti is recorded by Weatherbys as having two Deep Impact juveniles among his string – both owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.

One, Zafeer, is a colt out of the Australian-bred mare Zumoorooda, a winning daughter of Encosta De Lago and Group 3 scorer Murjana. He was a promising second, beaten less than a length despite starting tardily and running green, on his sole start at Yarmouth last month.

His next run could come in a sire and dam restricted maiden at Doncaster on Friday.

The other, Beela Hudood, is a filly out of South African Group 1 heroine Amanee, a Pivotal mare from the illustrious Miesque family. She is yet to have had the wraps taken off her.

Sir Michael Stoute is also listed as training two Deep Impact two-year-olds, neither of whom have run yet.

Katara, a filly, is the first foal out of Al Shaqab Racing's Group 2-placed New Approach mare Asyad, while Satono Japan, a colt, is out of Dubawi Heights, a dual Grade 1-winning Dubawi three-parts sister to Poule d'Essai des Poulains victor Make Believe.

Satono Japan was bought by Hajime Satomi, owner of stars who have also borne the Satono prefix such as Satono Crown and Satono Diamond, for 180 million yen (£1.37m/€1.52m) at the JRHA Yearling Sale last year.

John Gosden meanwhile is the custodian of Star Spirit, the Deep Impact filly who is the first foal out of Lady Bamford's Prix de Diane winner Star Of Seville.

Aidan O'Brien, who tasted Classic victory with Saxon Warrior, has at least two more Deep Impact two-year-olds housed at Ballydoyle: Fancy Blue, a half-sister to stakes winners Casterton and Smuggler's Cove out of Chenchikova, a Sadler's Wells sister to High Chaparral; and Star Of Juniper, a colt out of Kissed By Angels, a Group 3-winning Galileo sister to Minding.

Thanks to Savarin, Hidaka and Zafeer, Deep Impact's record with his two-year-olds in Europe this season is two unbeaten fillies and a promising runner-up from just three runners.

That record will inevitably worsen as more progeny of that age appear on the track, but maybe not drastically so considering the pedigrees and connections of the horses in question.
