Quartile analysis of results from Tuesday's session of the Goffs Land Rover Sale reveals the strength seen across the varying sectors of the market during a record-setting edition of the store auction.

The session's median price rose by 18 per cent to €45,000 – believed to be a record for a store sale – having been €38,000 12 months ago. The lower, lower-middle and upper-middle quartile averages duly showed significant year-on-year gains.

The upper-middle quartile average grew by ten per cent, up to €51,885, while the lower-middle average showed the steepest rise, increasing by 13 per cent to €36,765.

It is often said that trade is most perilous on the lowest rung of the pricing ladder, so it was encouraging to see the lower quartile average also show a nine per cent increase to €21,140.
Those results are underpinned by the session's impressive clearance rate of 91 per cent, as 242 of 267 offered lots changed hands during the more select day of selling. In turn, those transactions brought turnover of €11,709,500, a 12 per cent year-on-year increase from the €10,452,000 registered in 2018.

Despite the gains in aggregate sales, the top end of the market proved the softest, with the upper quartile average of €87,610 down ten per cent from the comparative figure at last year's edition.

That drop off does not come as a huge surprise, as this year's top lot brought €185,000, with Martin Brassil signing for the Yeats half-brother to Tombstone, whereas a Flemensfirth relation to Master Minded led a strong top end at €325,000 in 2018.

There were, however, more six-figure lots on Tuesday, with 15 stores bringing €100,000 or more compared to 14 at last year's session, while 103 lots made €50,000 or more.

The average for the session remained on a par with 2018's figure at €48,385.

While there was no show-stopping top lot, these results speak of a market boasting strength in depth, with rewards for breeders, vendors and pinhookers spread much more evenly than is often the case. Achieving such results across the board is no mean feat.
