The requiem mass and funeral of Hugh Hyland, who had become the senior figurehead of Oghill House Stud, will take place on Thursday after his death at the age of 72.

Hyland and brother Pat, who died a year and a half ago, were responsible for producing such smart horses as the Racing Post Trophy winner Marcel, Washington DC, Mixed Intention and Rose Of Kildare.

Last year Oghill House was responsible for jointly breeding the Queen Mary scorer Quick Suzy, which left him to say: "To have a Royal Ascot winner is as big a thrill as you could get."

The close-knit family were honoured with the special recognition award at the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association's annual ceremony.

The brothers were the fourth generation to run the 300-acre operation in County Kildare, which transitioned from farming to full-time horse breeding in the 1980s. Hugh’s son John has moved to the fore and is consigning at Goffs this week.

A distinguished Gaelic footballer for his local side in his youth, Hyland’s death notice described him as: "Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Miriam, adored father of Barbara Ann [Hewson], John and son-in-law Tim. Adored granddad to Hugh, Honor, Flora and Nicholas. Sadly missed and much loved brother to Stephanie [Maher], James, Phil [Murphy], Vonie [Macken], David and Paul. Brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, much loved nieces and nephews, extended family, relatives and a large circle of friends."

Private ceremonies will take place at 11am in St Peter & Paul's Church, Monasterevin and St Brigid's Cemetery, Nurney, but they will be streamed at and . Family flowers only.
