Gold medals on snow for Arizkorreta and Lucayan in Grosser Preis von St Moritz

Trainer Guillermo Arizkorreta was in Group-winning mode in Baden-Baden last September, and the Spaniard was once again in the headlines when his Furioso landed the Longines 82nd Grosser Preis von St Moritz on Sunday.

Held as a local Group 2, the race holds pride of place at the White Turf meeting and the six-year-old proved too good when holding off the efforts of another previous St Moritz winner in British raider Mordred.

Furioso is by Lucayan, a son of Turtle Bowl whose career highlight came when landing the Poule d'Essai des Poulains in 2012 for Francois Rohaut and owner Pandora Stud.

His other Group-race successes included the Hollywood Turf Cup - at the sadly defunct Hollywood Park, site of the stadium at which the Super Bowl was played last weekend - and a handful of Graded placings stateside for Neil Drysdale.

Arizkorreta was continuing his sweep of European prizes having saddled a notable Group-race double at Baden-Baden in Germany last autumn with Kitty Marion and Rodaballo in the Goldene Peitsche and Oettingen Rennen.

Lucayan, who was retired to Yeguada Torre Duero in Spain in 2015, and then moved on to Haras de Saint Vincent in France, has sired winners in those two countries including Gallaside, Malvina and Gallardise.

Furioso is out of the Aga Khan Stud-bred Anabaa mare Ebalviyra, a winner for John Oxx and a half-sister to four winners including Ederan, who was stakes-placed in France.

They are all out of Ebareva, a Machiavellian half-sister to the likes of Gold Cup winners Estimate and Enzeli, Irish Oaks and Prix Royal-Oak heroine Ebadiyla, Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Edabiya and the stakes-placed Eytarna - the dam of the multiple Group winner and Classic-placed Eziyra among three black-type performers.
