Enable's half-brother Centroid gets career off to perfect start
Three-year-old colt wins at Leopardstown for Dermot Weld
Juddmonte homebred Centroid, the Dansili three-year-old half-brother to Enable, rewarded connections for their patience on Thursday evening when making a winning debut in the 1m2f maiden at Leopardstown for Dermot Weld.
Sent off the 4-5 favourite, Centroid broke well enough to be settled just off the pace by Declan McDonogh. He made smooth headway entering the straight to challenge the leader National Wealth before lengthening clear for a two-length success over the 75-rated Leaderboard.
“He’s a grand horse and bred in the purple,” McDonogh told At The Races. “He did it nicely. The ground is probably as quick as he wants it and I expect a bit of improvement from him when he gets some ease and goes up a couple of furlongs. When I got a couple of cracks into him, he picked up well.”
Centroid becomes the fourth winner out of Concentric, best known as the dam of last year’s champion Enable. The Nathaniel filly swept the Oaks, Irish Oaks, King George, Yorkshire Oaks and Arc during an outstanding three-year-old campaign for Khalid Abdullah and John Gosden last season.
Unfortunately, a minor knee injury has sidelined her so far this year but she did work under Frankie Dettori on the Al Bahathri gallop on Wednesday morning and has been given a host of early entries, among them the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Arc.
Concentric, herself winner of the 2007 Listed Prix Charles Laffitte, is also dam of the Group 3-placed Contribution. The daughter of Sadler’s Wells is a sister to Group 2 winner Dance Routine, dam of multiple Group/Grade 1 winner and $9.5 million earner Flintshire (also by Dansili), and a half-sister to Group 3 winner Apsis.
They are out of Group 3 winner Apogee, in turn a daughter of 1984 Oaks runner-up Bourbon Girl.
This family joined Juddmonte with the acquisition of Centroid’s fourth dam, Fleet Girl, within a package of mares belonging to Dr Schnapka's Belair Stud in 1982.
Concentric’s two-year-old daughter Entitle, a sister to Centroid, made a low-key debut for Gosden behind the useful Neverland Rock at Newmarket in June.
The mare also has a yearling filly by Frankel and a colt foal by Sea The Stars.
