July Cup day at Newmarket gets off to a flying start with a really interesting 7f fillies’ maiden (1.30), so make sure you have an early lunch.

The place to start is with Lordship Stud homebred Bouquet, by Dark Angel and out of Galileo’s daughter Bound, who cost a cool 2,200,000gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, carrying this particular foal.

Bound was trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore partners and was a Listed winner, though she was arguably more impressive on the page, being out of Oaks runner-up Remember When and related to some high-class performers.

Bouquet is with the Gosden yard and looks a cracking ride to pick up for Georgia Cox, with this being perhaps the day above all others in the calendar when opportunity knocks for jockeys.

James Doyle is on stablemate and fellow newcomer Ephrata, who likewise takes the eye on her pedigree.

Juddmonte’s homebred is by Ghostzapper, the awesome four-time Grade 1 winner whose career highlight was arguably winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Lone Star Park in 2004.

She is the first foal out of Dansili’s daughter Grand Jete, herself a stakes winner in the US, in a Grade 3 at Monmouth Park.

It’s also an exciting day for Hunscote Stud, who introduce homebred Salve Japan, trained by Hugo Palmer. She is by Dabirsim out of Dalakhani’s daughter Salve Diana, a half-sister to US Grade 2 winner Salve Germania.

The opening 7f novice stakes at Ascot (1.50) for two-year-olds likewise has half a dozen newcomers. Possibly the pick on paper is Shadwell homebred Khanjar, from the William Haggas stable.

By Kodiac, the colt is the first foal out of Oasis Dream’s daughter Naafer, a sister to prolific winner Ertijaal, whose victories included the Listed Spring Cup at Newbury and a Group 2 and Group 3 at Meydan.
