Chatham Street Lad keeps Mick Winters on the road to success

Although happy to play up to the cameras, Mick Winters proved once again that he is nobody's fool with his shrewd acquisition of impressive Caspian Caviar Gold Cup winner Chatham Street Lad.

The cult hero trainer, who rolled on the turf in celebration of a job well done following his horse's demolition of a smart field at Cheltenham, acquired his latest star for only €30,000 as a three-year-old at the 2015 Goffs Land Rover Sale.

Chatham Street Lad, who had already doubled his purchase price with five victories including four at his home track, is from solid chasing stock.

By Beneficial, he is from a line of good jumpers bred by the Magee family. His dam, the Broken Hearted mare Hearts Delight, won an Irish mares point as well as a chase at Tramore and her brother Numbercruncher has been prolific between the flags and ran in last year's Foxhunters' at Aintree.

Their grandam was a sister to Broadheath, who won the 1986 version of the Hennessy Gold Cup under a certain Paul Nicholls.

Hearts Delight is now 20 but still seems to be going strong. Eithne Magee has bred Chatham Street Lad's half-brother Destiny Is All, placed a couple of times this year over fences for Lucinda Russell.

She has a two-year-old colt by Ask and was most recently covered by Grange Stud new boy Capri.
