Award-winning Australian racing journalist Andrew Hawkins has been appointed editor of ANZ Bloodstock News.

Hawkins, 29, can already boast an impressive and varied CV, his experience including not just writing but broadcasting, syndication, form analysis, bookmaking and administration.

He said: “I am honoured to be joining the ANZ Bloodstock News team. ANZ Bloodstock News is a tremendous brand and, as a long-term reader, I am excited for what the future holds for the publication.

“The Australian and New Zealand industries are the envy of the world for different reasons. As editor, I look forward to playing a part in telling the stories of these industries to a global readership, as well as bringing the stories of the international racing and breeding world to ANZ Bloodstock News’ dedicated audience down under.”

ANZ director James Oldring added: “We are absolutely delighted to announce Andrew as the new editor for ANZ Bloodstock News. He’s already demonstrated a huge passion for the racing and breeding industry, not only in Australia but also globally, and his track record of success speaks for itself.

“I am sure he will prove to be a considerable asset to the publication and I’m really looking forward to working with him to continually improve and expand ANZ Bloodstock News’ offering.”

International racing is Hawkins' forte and passion. He spent five years in Hong Kong, working as a racing content specialist with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and a reporter and sub-editor with the South China Morning Post, and has also become a familiar face on Sky Racing as an international racing expert.

His work has won a number of awards, including a Longines award for his 2015 Hong Kong International Races coverage, while he was recognised in the Fitzdares 35 Under 35 (global) and the Melbourne Racing Club’s 40 Under 40 (Australia-wide) list of influential young people in racing.

He has travelled extensively, taking in racing in almost 20 countries, while he has worked at most of the world’s major race meetings, including the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, Golden Slipper, The Championships, Royal Ascot, the Breeders’ Cup, Dubai World Cup, Japan Cup, the Derby at Epsom and the Hong Kong International Races.

Hawkins has managed two syndicates, bringing new people into racing, and has also worked as an assistant judge and raceday official at Australian Turf Club meetings in Sydney, having started his working life as a parking attendant at Rosehill.

He graduated with a journalism degree from Charles Sturt University’s Bathurst campus in December 2012. He completed half of his final year overseas at the University of Limerick in Ireland.

ANZ is one of four businesses in the Spotlight Sports Group – Racing Post, Apsley (My Racing and Free Super Tips) and ICS (Independent Content Services) being its stablemates.
