Terry and Cahill 4-5 to be heart of Roy's defence

RIO FERDINAND, Michael Carrick, Micah Richards, Kyle Walker Dean Sturridge, Adam Johnson, Ben Foster and David Stockdale were all odds-on shots with bookmakers last week to be named in Roy Hodgson's 23-man England squad for Euro 2012.

But they, as well as the likes of Peter Crouch, Phil Jagielka and Paul Scholes, are among the omissions on Wednesday lunchtime from Hodgson's party - to be captained by Steven Gerrard - for the jamboree in Poland and the Ukraine that starts on June 8.

John Terry, Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy, subject of an eve of announcement gamble, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe and Stewart Downing are the headline if not entirely surprising inclusions.

Blue Square reacted to the announcement by shoving England out to 11-1 (like Boylesports) for glory and cutting them to 11-8  to suffer the ignominy of a group stage exit. Hills made a similar move and 7-4 is the best available now for doubting punters.

Terry is now 4-5 with BetVictor, to partner clubmate Gary Cahill in the heart of Hodgson's defence of the Three Lions opener against France in Donetsk on June 11. Joleon Lescott and Phil Jones are the other main central defenders options.

With Walker injured and Richards left out, Johnson is 1-4 with Coral to be right back against Le Bleus (Jones is 5-1 with BetVictor). Ashley Cole is obviously the first-choice left-back with Leighton Baines as back-up.

In midfield, Gerrard, Scott Parker and Frank Lampard look certainties to start if fit against France with a perm of two from Ashley Young, Theo Walcott, Gareth Barry, James Milner, Downing and the uncapped Oxlade-Chamberlain (8-1 with Paddy Power to start).

This is presuming that with Wayne Rooney suspended for the first two games of the campaign, Danny Welbeck is up front alone.

Welbeck is 1-2 with Paddy Power to start against Les Bleus. Carroll is 6-4 with Hills. Both firms make Defoe 9-4 to start.

Rooney and Welbeck are 6-1 joint-favourites to be England's top goalscorer at the tournament.

BetVictor go 13-10 about five or more England group stage goals and 13-10 about two or less goals conceded.
